Given how IVE snatched up the ROTY title, it was a given that Lesserafilm, which also had popular IZ*ONE members, would claim the runner-up title.
But NewJeans, with no popular or well known trainees or anything outside of Min HeeJin hype, came and completely blew Lessera away in digitals, physicals and overall popularity

Yeah they have a lot of potential and they're already doing well, I just kinda expected a bit better

The Garam story sucked the life out of the first 2 weeks/months energy and they still were nowhere close to flopping.
most nugu groups crash and burn with that much heat. given all this this is a good number 3 months out

And 400k albums most girl groups will never see that.

Given all that do not waste time grieving for lesserafim if this is the floor given how the cycle went off the rails immediately.

Ive seems a lock, love dive is 4 months old for goodness sake. They fought off big bang tomboy and the rest of the digi mons and are still there.

Tables turn as time goes by, previous generations have taught us that. Dal Shabet and Hello Venus were considered rookies of the year back in time, does anybody know them here? Barely I guess, but I am sure most would recognize AOA and EXID and Crayon pop (even if they had only one huge song).
That being said out of the rookies I like IVE the most and I see great potential in them, just a little reminder that the first year in a group's career not going well doesn't decide their whole future for them although lesserafim has great album sales.

I love both IVE and Newjeans, but for me Newjeans is far more deserving of ROTY over IVE or LSF. With their debut it really feels like a “cultural reset” as fans like to say, the zeitgeist of kpop seems to have changed. It reminds me the most of when EXO blew up a signalled 3rd gen. I think people will look back on Newjeans debut in the future and call it as the point 4th gen truly began.

i liked attention but there was nothing culturally resetting about their debut. generic ass pop songs mixed with overly sexualised lyrics for a teen girl group.

meanwhile only ive out of all the girlgroups had two consecutive hits, and have already sold about 1 million copies with their two single albums and even le sserafim have debuted with quite a few viral songs from their ep but newjeans their debut was a mess and hard carried by the negative attention

I’m not really into charts and numbers, but from what I can gather, they have caught the imagination of the Korean public like no group has in a very long time, and I expect them to have a lasting impact on the industry. I would imagine we’ll see a wave of copycat groups over the next year (with y2k fashion, natural looks, no rapping), and might even see Boy Group equivalents because it’s commonly thought that none of the current stock of Boy Groups have much appeal to the general public. This is why I think they have changed the zeitgeist of kpop.
