I ALMOST got into a car wreck today! (1 Viewer)

I'm just thanking God right now because it could've been BAD!

So you know those little roads where the main way you go straight with no stop signs where you pass an intersection but those on either side of the intersection have to stop right away for approaching cars without a stop sign?

So literally I was driving back home from school with no care in the world when suddenly, I'm on a street just like that.

There was then this woman who pulled out RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME as I was just going because I didn't have a stop sign. SHE DID. Yet she did not LOOK and she almost caused me to hit her, causing significant damage and it WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN MY FAULT. It was her failure to yield for right of way. I had the right of way, she did not.

If I hadn't been able to think quickly and slam my breaks when I did, it would've been a BAD accident. Definitely not enough to kill somebody or injure them too badly but definitely a lot of damage to both of our vehicles. If it were a case where one of us did get hurt, I could sue her and win the case because it's illegal pretty much everywhere to not yield to the right of way.

So, do me all a favor. Those that do drive or plan on being able to drive any time in the future DON'T do what this lady did and look both in all directions before crossing over a stop sign. And for those who drive and would never do that, always pay attention on the road and drive defensively. You never know when someone is going to do something like this, though you think they would know not to do such a thing. Never assume that everyone is a good driver.

I'm glad that no one got hurt but people really need to know how to drive correctly I almost got ran over 3 times bc of people not knowing I had the right of way

I guess it is better for you to go slow and do minimal damage than to go fast and do a lot more damage and possibly hurt someone because people behind you are angry that you're not going over the speed limit. (Seriously though, people going a lot over the speed limit is way too common here. People really be going 60 on 45mph roads all the time here)

But yeah, they teach you in the handbook to drive DEFENSIVELY. You can never assume that everyone is a good driver and you have to constantly be conscious and aware. Even if you're not making fatal mistakes (the term used in driving tests when the test taker makes a mistake that would definitely cause a wreck), you still gotta watch for people that might.

Oh my goodness, for real? I'm glad that you're okay, too. That would be scary.
Like I hate how I felt when this happened today. Like it's such a flip of a coin when you're casually driving, enjoying downtown (because that's where I was), listening to music to suddenly almost getting into a wreck. It's scary how close I was to this car. It reminds me of my first days of learning how to drive with my permit and I would develop anxiety almost every time. Heck, I couldn't even make simple turns around an empty parking lot I was so nervous. There's nothing worse than being nervous and being behind a wheel. It does you so many wonders if you're completely calm and your mind is not somewhere else when driving.

Like I remember the last time I got anxious while driving because I was alone, didn't know where I was, and was a little bit further from home than usual. I just went to the nearest building, parked, stayed for a few minutes until I calmed down, and took the freeway home with no problem.

But yeah, that's how I felt for a second. After that, it was anger. I was basically ranting to myself while driving. I even treated myself to some Mickey D's medium fries to calm my nerves (don't worry, I rarely have fast food). And after that, it was just happiness because if I wasn't paying complete attention and didn't act quickly, it would've been a LOT worse. I don't think I was going fast enough to cause damage to me or anyone in the opposing car but the damage would've been serious on the vehicles themselves.

Yep. I think this also taught me the importance of paying extra attention at all times. At first, I was just like "okay, surely it can't be that bad right?" and only paid attention enough so I wouldn't cause problems where it would my fault. But I'm glad that I was very alert this time because that would've been a close call.

I wasn't going fast enough to hurt anybody but it would've most definitely done some damage.

Well, technically, the rule that she broke would've been completely her fault regardless of my age or hers. I'm not sure about the legal stuff but I'm pretty sure that in a case that it would need to be taken to court, I'll have a pretty strong case on my side.

It literally took me so long to learn how to drive...I'm a slow learner in that sense lol. I do think it had a lot to do with me driving with my parents because I'm a lot better (for the most part) driving alone, ironically. I thought it would be the complete opposite tbh. Driving with my dad with me is scary because he'll get so mad if you make a big mistake which makes sense but it doesn't help if I'm so nervous because of it and then it's a full cycle because if you're nervous or feeling any other strong emotion, driving is HARD. My mom was better and I much preferred practicing with her but she would still kind of scare me too. But I'm glad that I got better and am driving my brother around, and running errands for my parents to help them out. I don't really understand not trying to get your license as a teenager if you are able to because it can help your caretakers out SO much and also maybe give you a little more freedom for yourself (generally speaking, btw)

LOL that's smart. I remember when I was struggling to learn how to drive, my parents were considering driver's ed. Well...until they saw the prices...(super high btw lol). So they decided to teach me themselves. I don't regret it. I wanted my parents to teach me instead of a complete stranger, y'know? And I definitely didn't want to sit through a class in the summertime that I didn't have to do. It was also a lot cheaper on my parents which as I grow older, I'm definitely starting to understand the sacrifices, especially financial, that they made and I'm working hard to pay them back (both in a literal sense and figuratively)

OMG OMG ARE THEY OKAY???? I sure hope that they are!!!!!!!

That's honestly so scary like I can't imagine the stuff that the victim's family must be going through after that...my goodness...

And that is another big cause of these car accidents. Apart from people not paying attention, people being careless. Like there's a reason why it says in most American state driver's handbooks that you CANNOT go over the speed limit. I'm guilty of going a little bit over the speed limit but it's almost never more than 10 over. (this next part, I'm speaking for my state only. Some my be different, idk) Technically, you can get a ticket for going at least 5 over and it's a misdemeanor until 15 over (and then it's a felony). And 20 over is expensive but the mot trouble you'll get into is if you hit someone, and especially, especially if they were injured either short term or long term or even worse, and worse case ever, death. The legal stuff hitting a biker or pedestrian alone is bad enough especially if you were breaking two laws at once (running a stop sign/light, speeding, etc. and hitting someone). I can't imagine how bad it would be if you actually injure (or, worse case scenraio), kill them.

The only way from my house to get to school is on a 45mph speed limit "highway" and I'm literally going no more than 50 or 55 and there are people passing me and going so much faster me as if they were like "this person in front of me is way to slow!" and I'm like each time "how fast do you ahve to be going if I'm only going 5-10mph over speed and you're needing to pass me? Like, come on now!"
