Why do we tend to automatically dislike members that get added after debut? (1 Viewer)

wow so many, I was not aware thats a lot more than I thought!

Now we need to analyse which ons got good reactions and which ones bad

I'm not sure for all of them because I didn't closely follow all of these groups when the member turnover happened, but I know that FT Island's Seunghyun had more antis when he debuted that it was a really hard time for him, even though the guitarist he replaced was someone who left of his own accord. People felt like he shouldn't get any vocal lines, even though I think he really added a lot of additional flavor to the group.

Super Junior's Kyuhyun dealt with a lot of hardships from both ELF and the other members of the group, because SM wanted to emulate Japanese groups at the time, and wanted to have the fresh faces replace one of the existing members. So Super Junior was actually Super Junior 05 at debut, with the idea being that each year would be a slightly refreshed lineup. He talked later about how he was treated really coldly by the other group members until they got their first win and Leeteuk acknowledged his hard work for the sake of the group. And we all know at this point that SM had abandoned the replacement concept.

With KARA, I remember people being very upset about the whole Kara Project show that was made to find the additional member, Youngji. Fans felt like KARA should continue as a trio after two members had left. Then when Youngji joined KARD as a feature in Oh Nana, people were really happy about that. Then, when KARA just did their 15th year anniversary, some people were mad at Youngji "replacing" Hara, even though Youngji had actually been in the group when Hara was still a member and still alive. The two she had replaced with the Kara Project show were Nicole and Jiyoung, not Hara.

With WJSN, I remember fans being mad that Yeonjung joining after her IOI stint was not going to be a win for her OR the group, that her popularity from IOI was going to overshadow the other members and sticking her into an established group was going to diminish her own popularity. Which tbh, I'm not sure fans were wrong about that.

So, basically, if you're big enough to have fans already, it's usually a bit of a hot mess.

and of those groups you two mentioned how many are still in existence?
and how many renewed?
and how many disbanded or had members left before their contract expired?
it would be good to know if the addition of such a member affected the overall longevity of the group

1. Dia- Haven’t followed them tbh but it seems they recently disbanded after 7 years together.
2. Stellar- Disbanded after 7 years I believe. The group was a mess, members were forced into concepts they didn’t like, ect. But they had some fans base after their concept switch, for better or for worse.
3. After School- Not disbanded officially, they have one member left (Nana). They did get a lot more attention than most of these groups I think, they’re pretty well known for various songs and some unique performances/dances/ect. They’re a group that had a graduation/rotational concept right from the start, so it wasn’t a big surprise I think when they did have members leave/join.
4. DKZ- Still promoting, but a rather young and pretty nugu group. The lineup changes were pretty recent, so it’s hard to tell for sure how it’s affected them.
5. NCT- Definitely very big, and with most people they’re happy to see NCT gain more members and subunits. People get pissy when they try to change subunit members, even when they’re designed to be that way from the start (NCT Dream primarily).

oh yeah that one I got, but you said it happens like every year, so I thought there also cases not related to medical issues

I wasn't in the fandom when the other members left so I can't comment but Jisoo left due to a panic disorder then they shortly disbanded after unfortunately.

Most people so far only gave examples where adding a member was not a problem at all, I arealdy doubted the idea of my thread

I think you make a great point with the popularity, once you already have fans, it becomes a problem. For nugus there is just no one to get angry I guess

They changed around NCT 127 somewhat (added Doyoung, Jungwoo, and Johnny and unofficially removed Winwin), which I know the Winwin thing bothered some fans, and then they started a graduation concept for Dream (removed Mark) but then backtracked and said it would no longer be a graduation rotational concept and added Mark back.

They never outright said they’d remove him, but he hasn’t been in group promotions in years.

Well he was added to WayV, another NCT subunit around that time I believe so that’s probably why
