That would never work in the US. People would get shot over 4 cents. Maybe Americans are scary...
Also stores would calculate the exact charge to screw the customer every time and always round in the stores favor. Yeah, I would not be ok with this.

I think western countries should take a lesson from asian countries about making more demoninations in coins. The upfront coast is higher but they last longer. Then to cost of making pennies would be less of an issue. I think up to a 10 or 20 dollar coin would be reasonable.

bills degrade much faster. The life expectancy of paper money is actually only a few years. Coins can last decades longer. We're still finding ancient coins from thousands of years ago.

Good question, I don't honestly know. Plastic as money sounds really weird! But plastic still wouldn't last as long as coin.
