am I just really bad at math or are the expectations schools put on children just really high? (1 Viewer)

so, I'm working at an elementary school and helped some fourth graders with their math homeworks… and the tasks were like 192739 divided by 13
the children weren’t allowed to use any tools for help, they had to solve the tasks in their heads

That's ridiculous. They could at least let them use short division.
true, they only have 45 minutes time for all their homeworks and they were already struggling so much with math
:crycry:

Are they training them to be calculators? Come on i barely use math on the daily, unless u wanna continue in specific fields i think it's exagerated
the thing is, i work at a school where the parents put a lot of pressure on their children and want them to go to the best schools
pretty much every child here has 4-5 activites after school per week, it's worse than a full time job

Yeah sounds like prison. If the child enjoys it fine but otherwise... You are robbing them of the best years of their life

I’ve never needed to know how to do that in my life and I’ve done linear algebra and differential equations classes (not the highest level math classes possible but higher than a lot of people will need). Sure basic mental math is good, but not that.

I don't think you're bad at math, but that is the kind of math I did in 4th grade and even 3rd grade yeah, long division, and it wasn't considered advanced math for 4th grade or anything, it was the normal level. And I went to a normal cheap public school, not a rigorous private school or anything. How old are 4th graders there?

We used pencil and paper for long division tho

Go away :chickill:
But more seriously from what Magician said it’s not the same. Sure you can do long division in your head but it’s significantly harder than just doing normal long division with a pen and paper. It’s a lot to keep track of.

ah yeah, I don't think there's any reason to do any long division in your head at any age

At 12/13/14 years old I would do long math problems, multiplication, division, etc. that we had to do as part of a more complicated problem (geometry, algebra, etc.) in my head rather then get out a calculator bc lazy and I can do mental math (sometimes I would forget to carry smth but usually I could do it in my head) but not cause we had to, it was faster for me than getting out a calculator, and that was middle school age/early high school not 4th grade

Being able to do mental math is beneficial no doubt but within reason imo, which idt means dividing 192739 by 13 for 4th graders is.
Also smh go finish your assignments :pandacop:

Where is this school? I'm guessing not in the US.

In the US a 4th grade math problem is "10 Zebras are at a party. 2 went out to get extra large fries. How many Zebras are left?"

Not quite. The number of whatever they’re getting needs to be absurdly large and nonsensical, like 500 window panes or something :shamesica:
