whether gfriend would have returned a sufficient profit is not up to you or me - it's source and ultimately hybe's decision and that's my point - as fans of kpop groups not merely gfriend or nuest or whatever we have to understand why a company does what it does even if we disagree with the decision to do it...

Granted this isn't the OG thread but Hybe has done plenty of free concerts and while they've never done a project to the extent of station, their artists have put of mixtapes and solo songs without it being a debut before. LSF Yunjin just got hers.
Look at Ador, Hybe is perfectly capable of maintaining autonomy

maybe hybe took over source specifically for the purposes of acquiring the trainees and knew in advance they would disband gfriend when their contract ran out and as a last hoorah kinda thing gave gfriend the 3 albums???

Most Hybe acts I've seen have released 2-3 albums a year, outside of BTS once they got too old for it? Doesn't look that uncommon.

Likewise, I'd love to understand Hybe's logic in expecting Gfriends sales to magically shoot up 6 years into their career under them when they never did anything significant to promote them. Gfriends sales were good for the time they were in and the only meaningful thing Hybe brought to GFriend was a fancy mv and beef with several networks...

Would have been nice if they'd informed the members upfront about that instead of just dragging them along at the end and refusing to renew any of them. Yeah but going from 2 eps a year to a 3rd (walpurgis had old tracks that pushed it to studio status) isn't exactly a huge push, and it is something GFriend has done before

I've outlined reasons why Gfriends disbandment was a bad idea and gave alternatives that provide a better long term gain so me being able to do that proves it was a bad business decision that could've easily been handled differently regardless of Hybes own thought process.

If Hybe was just overconfident in purchasing Source Music expecting Gfriends sales to go up just because they were under Hybe then that's also a terrible business decision that's unrealistic as that'd require changing Gfriend in order to get new people interested in them but as an old group that wasn't going to just happen overnight.

besides there's nothing that you nor I nor anyone here can do anything about it - it is what it is...

that's not for me to judge since I don't know how gfriend would have panned out if they did not disband - neither can you - what I do know is that people in hybe considered the issue and made a judgment based on that which resulted in disbanding - you cannot prove it's a bad decision since no one knows what would have happened if gfriend didn't disband - that's total speculation - maybe they could have done really well - maybe not we will never know

maybe hybe bought source not because of gfriend but because of the other trainees in source? ie those that went on to form LSFM? again I dunno I merely speculating

and that's my point we are both speculating...and unless you are more knowledgeable have one of the biggest kpop companies and have additional information that hybe doesn't - the only people that know are those within hybe who made the decision and all other things being equal hybe would know more about it than you and I...
