I usually don't regret most of my reading, since i'm already very picky with choosing a book, BUT during high school we had to read this book named ''Otilia's Enigma'', sounds mysterious right?

The book is about a young medicine student moving to the capital to study and living with his uncle who has a money hungry sister and a daughter that he raises named Otilia. They fell in love but the uncle's sister is jealous of Otilia and they do everything so she doesn't inherit or have a good marriage. There are family fights, death, theft and more, but the most boring part was how tedious the descriptions were. I feel like half the book was the description of scenery. I read the book in a year, cause i always gave up on it!

Shadow by Jenny Moss. It was pretty boring and like most other young adult king and queen fantasy books, just not as good. I finished to see how it ended but I should have just ditched it.

Oh, boy, how much time do we have??

The book I absolutely hated the most is The Power by Naomi Alderman. Basically, it turns out women are all Storm from X-Men. Kind of cool, right? Right. Except for the fact that nearly every single chapter -- including the flipping epilogue -- features someone being sexually assaulted, actively running away from someone trying to sexually assault them, or describing when they were sexually assaulted in the past. Mostly children. It's the one book that my book club put up that I'm genuinely kind of pissed about, because the person who put it up had read it before and didn't think to tell anyone "hey, there's a LOT of rape in this book."

I don't even mind dark topics, but it's not apparent that's what you're getting when you read the back-of-the-book blurb. (I just re-read my Goodreads review on it, and while all the assault stands out, the main story is basically "if women were more physically powerful than men, then they would also all suck and the world would go to hell." It's just a weird take.)

It's extra disappointing because it accidentally kicked off a weird "fuzzy books only" streak for a few months, and I like a good cozy read, but man, a lot of them are also like 300 pages of nothing happening. xD I can't even hate them because what's to hate about someone drinking a lot of tea, but the nicest thing I can think to say about most of them is "technically, there are worse ways to waste my time."

It was a choice! And there are just other books that do that "what if women suddenly became REALLY powerful" question better, like When Women Were Dragons by Kelly Barnhill. (Fair warning, it's written like it's a memoir, which that style might be off-putting to some people. But I read it right after Jennette McCurdy's memoir I'm Glad My Mom Died, so I was in the right mindset for that style.)

Throne of Glass...I forced myself to read it because it was so popular but I wanted to rip my eyes out after forcing myself through it.

It's oddly popular among members of my book club. I've never read it, because the blurb alone reads like bad YA without the courtesy to at least be short.

I read it and didn’t hate it at first but eventually did. It stands out in my mind because it’s fairly childish imo :headache:

I read the book in a year, cause i always gave up on it!
There was a book that I read when I was 9, it is the book of my nightmares, the ONLY book I have EVER read that has ever given me nightmares

And I'm lucky in the way I don't really even get nightmares, like I think other than this I've only had one other nightmare in my life?

And I read and watched lots of mysteries with murder and gore, children's horror, ghost stories, scary stories, fantasy stories with vampires, and werewolves, and all that age, mysteries were my main favorite genre, and I read anthologies of horror/scary stories including ghosts who became ghosts bc of murder, and all that, Bunnicula, Bailey School Kids, Weenies series, etc. and never gotten nightmares like this before?

It was in my 4th grade classroom's bookshelf, you could go there and read if you finish something early, during small breaks, etc. I read most of the books there.

The cover art wasn't even scary, the summary didn't seem scary, it was marketed as a children's book but who puts this in a children's book? I didn't even remember the name for years and found it by searching up " 100 year Halloween murder mystery kids book cat"

I tried so many different searches over years and NEVER found it before

This is the book:
1678244729776.png

I even had remembered the cover exactly
So basically it was Halloween, there were these two kids, they’re the main characters, the detectives, at the beginning they were at a graveyard for some reason idr

there was this store that used to be a mansion that had a murder long ago (or rather two).

So first (in the past) this man's wife is murdered, everyone is sure he killed her, but can't prove it yet THEN

this man was found murdered, and his body was disfigured so badly it was unrecognizable, he was only identified by his clothes and a pocket watch he had with an engraving that showed it was him

when his body was found, his giant black cat (way bigger than any normal cat, bigger than a lion even, like some supernatural thing) was covered in blood and licking blood of his/her(idr) paws

this cat was already not looking like a normal cat, huge, and they also found the cat covered with blood on the claws and all and the only one at the scene of the crime + super calm

the townspeople thought the cat was a monster, had murdered the owner, and put the cat in a sack, tied it, and then dropped the sack into a well and drowned the cat

the day that man was killed, another man, one from out of town, who was staying as a tenant with the victim or whatever, went missing, he was never seen again

assumption was he fled town and was never caught

so everyone is blaming out of town guy and/or giant cat for this guys death, the cat is a monster, other guy a murderer

maybe they worked together etc

how come other guy was never found, new identity?

what ACTUALLY happened all those years ago, that the kids found out and “solved the mystery” - the victim never actually died and neither newcomer nor cat killed him.

HE murdered the tenant, disfigured his body so badly it was unrecognizable, burned tenant’s clothes in fireplace, dressed tenant in his clothes and pocket watch to fake his own death, the cat was a normal cat just huge, cat didn’t even witness murder, cat was walking around, stepped in all the blood lying around from such a horrific death, and was trying to clean his or herself

the “victim” robbed the tenant, fled town after murdering the tenant in such a violent, horrific way that he was completely unrecognizable, while faking his own death, and framing both his cat and an innocent person who was actually the victim as his killers, also resulting in his innocent cat’s lynching (which he knew would happen), and both the tenant and his cat being demonized for DECADES maybe over a century idr, while he started a new life and identity, never got caught, and lived to old age

After I found the title I went on good reads and most of the reviews are either DELUSIONAL or PAID
"fun for kids" "adorable" "wholesome" WHERE????? NO:pepecross::pepecross::pepecross::pepecross::pepecross:

I also read Oliver Twist (the actual version, not any children's retelling) when I was around 7 or 8? and considered it the only book I didn't like at that time, but that was bc I didn't like how they treated him and the other orphans, and made them steal and a bunch of other stuff, but I think I didn't really understand it at that age, it's not a bad book at all, it's really good in fact, I just didn't like some of the characters, which was the point, they were horrible people and I hate child abuse. I was just way ahead of my reading level. I started thinking more darkly and cynically around age 10, so honestly had I waited a few years I might've enjoyed it a lot (not bc the story is happy or the characters overall are nice, but the tale, the development, the social awareness, etc.) the same way I love the Black Phone that's a horror movie

I have been trying to read Robert Louis Stevenson's Kidnapped for THREE YEARS at the very least. I started in 2019 or 2020 if not even earlier. Both my parents read and loved the book as children. We own a copy, either it used to be my mom's when she was a kid, or it was bought even before I was born, either way, it's old and worn. I have been TRYING to read it, but it is SO FREAKING BORING I'm sorry. How is this book a classic? I was trying to read a chapter each day before bed, but I just couldn't ... To this day it is my only DNF but I do plan to finish ... someday:oliviakek: I can read for hours at a stretch without break, finish books in a single day or two usually, and when I was 12 tried reading every book in the library in alphabetical order (of authors) regardless of how much the synopsis interested me, so that I could "not judge a book by it's cover", become more open-minded, broaden my horizons, find hidden gems, not focus on first impressions, etc. yet I can't finish Kidnapped (I didn't even make it to C btw, there is an INSANE amount of books obviously). I even did not read many new books for years because I was determined to finish that one before starting others (though I did fail a few times). It's at home, so won't get to read it and see where I left off till Thanksgiving (like I can check out a physical copy or an ebook but idk where I left off, I think chapter 14)

For anyone that actually read Robert Louis Stevenson's Kidnapped, how was it? How did you like it? Was it boring? Help me like it plz

And the thing is I still really want to read Treasure Island, and I might've read The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde when I was 9 or so, but I don't remember if I actually did, I know the story for sure though, I think I read a kid's version. I want to read the original version of that too.

It's not horror, it was not even supposed to be, it was a normal children's mystery about finding kidnapped cats!
