(TW: Physical punishment) I thought that the US obviously banned corporal punishment ages ago because let’s be real, it’s an antiqued and ridiculous way to get kids to behave. They didn’t. In 14 states there are no laws against it for public school (I didn’t include a state where there’s no state law but school districts ban it state wide). In some of those states it’s not used, in some it is though. In 4 states it’s banned for students with disabilities only (a couple of them allow the parent to give permission to use it though). Private school it’s legal in all states but two. Unsurprisingly, the southern states are the biggest offenders in this regard which is funny because in a similar topic I saw someone claim that Texas is very progressive in regards to corporal punishment when statistically they’re not. Kind of a weak argument imo. But the fact that it’s still used in some states is just stupid.

I do disagree with it not working, pain is hard wired into something to avoid. The issue is more that the line between discipline and abuse has always been thin, ppl are crazy and i could clearly see beliefs punished instead of actions even more so now. Let alone the numbers of just crazy ppl who would love wielding that kind of power.

To pick an old pop culture reference there is zero chance back in the day that dumping a slushie on someone would not have had you bending over and grabbing your ankle's in front of the class or in the principal's office. While ya counted the number of strokes.

I certainly would not want public school. I could see private schools if the parents chose the school and its clearly delineated..
But either way i think there are small chances of swats/ spanking to happen at the private or home level just too much risk. CPS will get involved, someone gets really hurt and lawsuits ect. Even if the specific code you are looking for does not exist once the law gets involved they will find something that works since there are zillions of laws hanging around.

To sum up if someone beats a child in the US i find it very likely that a way would be found to charge the people involved.
Maybe not they seem to let alot of crimes slide these days, but i can hope that this is one thing they would agree on.

Some studies and more official sources have shown that physical punishment generally causes more behavioral problems and cause students to act out more, including the WHO. Others say it’s effective if you only care about immediate results, but also has been shown to lead to problems later on. Yes of course these things vary from person to person, some students might grow up to be perfect model citizens, but there does seem to be a trend that students who have faced corporal punishment tend to have negative results behaviorally. And you won’t know if the student your punishing is one of the ones who’ll grow up to be a model adult or be prone to physical abuse with their partners.
I don’t see why private schools should be different than public. The parents choose the school yes. But because the parent wants their kid physically punishment doesn’t matter, they’re not the ones dealing with the consequences. The kids are.
As for whether it’s used, it’s recorded as being used in schools. Not as many as 50 years ago, especially since laws were different then (3 states outlawed it then). But used nonetheless. Some people claim that even when they got forms signed saying the parents didn’t give permission they’d use it anyways. I don’t know them personally so I obviously can’t know that for sure.

Its odd now that i think thru it.
as its seems to have been an elementary school thing.
I do not recall ever seeing it in secondary school (public ) on/ in stories from people, movies or tv.

I have heard that some private school ( mostly catholic that i can recall ) may have used rulers .
and i would be stunned if military schools did not have either official or stealth physical punishments.
at a secondary level.
