So for AAPI month, I have been saving lots of aapi books to read. Books by aapi authors or featuring aapi characters or inspired by asian cultures, mythology, customs, etc.
India, Pakistan, Korea, China, Taiwan, Japan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Thailand, Mongolia, Cambodia, and more! I saved all of it
I have already saved over 200 aapi books (and for whole series I only saved the first book and plan to read the whole series so that makes even more)
Pretty much any genre that I’d find somewhat interesting, just mostly not picture books, non fiction, poetry, too social media based romance, too mushy romance
Now there’s no way I’m gonna finish these all in May, not even this year or the next. But while they’re in the spotlight this month I’ve been saving them all so I can read eventually and I really want to! It’s really important to me that these authors and stories get spotlight. Like ofc I know there are books I want to read and will eventually that aren’t written by Asian authors and don’t have prominent Asian characters because I like the plot but I still want to read all these books as well
Idk is it racist for liking my race more?
we have like no representation here in the US, in media (films, television) and the rare times it exists it’s usually being a stereotype, brainy with no other personality, or sucks at math and disappointment to Asians, or culture is literally whole personality and not seen as an actual human. Can’t we be people?
As far as books specifically this is kinda important to me personally bc I had a lot of internalized racism as a child and thought “normal books” were about white boys. Even female authors typically wrote with male protagonists as far as most childrens books aimed for everyone rather than “girly girls” went, and it was a RARITY for Asian authors in America to not have a white kid as the protagonist in order to better fit it, have books people were more likely to read, etc. I also thought only white girls, and to some extent black girls, were pretty because that’s all you’d see in the media, on magazines, etc.
I remember the first book with a non white protagonist I read, when I was 8:
and I actually really liked it! But since then have I been keeping up with my people as well in my reading or have most of the books once again featured white protagonists
anyways would anyone else be interested in this? You can post any aapi books you read and I’ll do the same?
I was thinking of posting like the book, if it’s in a series and along with a review and my thoughts, who the author is their Asian background if any, the book, introduction of how Asian or aapi relation with characters or premise, what genre it is, who the book will appeal to, etc.
I gotta find someplace other than here to share and talk about this as well. AAPI month is as good a time as any to FINALLY join the Asian cultural appreciation club or smth (idr the name) and visit the Asian American center at school if it’s still active during summer
