It can I think but I really doubt it's covered in most high school biology classes, let alone middle school. Middle school bio (from my experience) is stuff like living things have cells, not specific chemical groups and their roles in various biological processes

Idk from what I've seen it's maybe somehow possible it was mentioned but it seems much more specific than something that would be mentioned there, not something basic like chlorophyll. I would think they did but I wouldn't imagine the other things mentioned were at a significantly higher level than that, not at that age. It would be odd if they were because you need the basics first. One doesn't go from "plants are green and grow with sunlight and water" to "xylyl refers to any of several isomeric monovalent radicals C8H9 derived from the three xylenes by removal of a hydrogen atom" that quickly.

Yeah middle school grades aren't standardized at all so there's all kinds of differences. 7th-8th, 6th-8th, 5th-8th, and 5th-7th are all ones I've heard of and I bet there's more. To me 5th-8th makes the most sense but schools do whatever really.

but we didn't learn stuff that basic we learned a lot of technical terms of plant anatomy and stuff in my 5th grade not just that simple stuff

we even had to draw their veins and all and label them
