When I was in undergrad I noticed that my notebook was full of notes and no free paper left. We had an in-class exercise that involved writing our answer on a blank piece of paper. So, I asked a friend behind me if I could borrow a sheet of paper. The professor happened to hear this and here's what she said in front of the entire classroom: "Why do people say that. You can't borrow a piece of paper. What are you gonna do? Give it back to her when you're done?"

How would you feel or react in such a situation?

Yes you can borrow , next time they need u can give on to them.
You could say it's a saying , just like "Somebody's missing gray matter"
Noone actually phisically misses gray matter , but still we use it everyday :)

I'd just laugh it off and say it's not literal

I would explain that it's entirely possible to do return an equal or greater type of paper at a later date OR take a picture of my notes with a phone and then return the original piece of paper containing all my notes. The second option is best because now my friend has twice the amount of notes in case they missed something. And to "borrow" something is no indication of the condition what was borrowed has to be return it in.
