This is how Survival shows work (4 Viewers)

1) Find specific Idols/trainees to create a group with, wayyyy ahead of time
2) Sign them to an exclusive contract 6 months before
3) Get creative and find ways to generate income, like staging a survival show around them (but make it look like they're actually surviving!)
4) Rig the show and find a couple of clowns to create drama stints to boost the ratings!
5) Create a couple of rags to riches storylines to also boost the ratings. Make sure they're at the bottom of the ladder on Day 1
6) Make sure you give the nicer outfits and songs to your gurls! Don't mess this up to make it credible for the fan voting!
7) Get all the sore losers to sign NDAs, show them the money and make sure that the penalties for betrayal outweighs their urges to open their mouths!
8) Whatever you do! Make sure that only the last episode is LIVE! This is required for evil edits and absolutely necessary to manipulate the storyline!

That's my take on it. Yours may differ but that's ok, they don't really care, as long as you vote and watch!

as whipped as i may be for some groups that came from survival shows, this is pretty much what happens (especially if it's an in-house show). and even if all the members may not necessarily be pre-decided, the pds sure have their protagonists and antagonists ready pre-airing, and edit accordingly. and to absolutely nobody's surprise, the antagonists are weeded out early on, and the group is comprised mostly (if not entirely) of the protagonists.

queendom was a bit of a mess but she was in a weird spot. I don't think they assigned songs for the first performance other than a master list of what they may have been willing to get rights too.

Teams have made awful awful song choices in the queendom series.
Far too often they try to be what they are not.
Lovelyz foremost among them.
I think kep1er picked some bad songs too dance groups should not try to cover vocal groups.
picking a summi song was silly.
Dowah picked her songs and was equally unimpressive.

The other thing That they all seem to do is assign a song then the kids have 1 maybe 2 days too put it together for the first check.
ofc most of them SUCK because people are out of position and learning maybe its a different language ect.
but the skilled teams usually pull it together, because they are skilled duh...
Some times by dress rehearsal they are still in trouble, but rarely are they awful.

My top issue is the number of assigned songs that are nowhere near they type of group they are going to make.
or the super pandering to the girl crush fans.
I would be ecstatic if there was never another bp song for example. That style is nowhere near what any group from one of the shows have gone for.

I remember how on No Mercy (the Monsta X survival show) they were close to the end (so some eliminations had already happened) and the show was suddenly like hey! Guess what! We’re randomly bringing in a new member! Have fun and if you got eliminated already sucks to be you! I still don’t get what they were aiming for there.

like i said, in in-house shows like sixteen and finding momoland (where it's based on one company and their trainees), it's 1000% all pre-decided. and in the case of produce and idol school, it was actually revealed as part of police investigations. but i'll say in the case of the planet series (saying this as someone who followed boys planet, though never watched an episode in its entirety), the votes are all audited by an external agency (samil pwc) which had absolutely nothing to gain from changing things around - and mnet had everything to lose (though then again i am a fan of zerobaseone, the boys planet group, so you may take what i say with a pinch of salt).

in fact fans did raise a bit of a hue and cry about mnet rigging stuff (not official votes, but likes on videos and stuff which would place certain members in advantageous positions) in favour of seok matthew, a trainee under mnh, which happens to be a cj enm subsidiary (though cj enm only hold like 10% shares of mnh so there's that). turns out nothing of the sort happened, he was just one of mnet's protagonists. and he did get into zerobaseone.

also zerobaseone did end up with members mnet weren't entirely keen on. well, one member. ricky. he's chinese and thus he was a perfect target for mnet. he'd weirdly get caught in the middle of other (chinese) contestants' evil edits, but sit right where he was and stare directly into the camera, with his lips saying nothing but his eyes saying "this is all scripted bullshit and you know it". but i don't really think he was ever intended to be one of mnet's antagonists - just a silly little clown (using your terminology) to be weeded out. but he made it, and at 4th place, no less. heck, even the fact that a chinese man, zhang hao, won 1st place on boys planet, breaking the 1st place streak mnet's biggest protagonist and center-pick, sung hanbin, had, shows that while things overall went as per mnet's plans, it went as per the fans' plans too.

but what other choice did the fans have? the show was centered around the protagonists of course, who else did a fan know? fans weren't given a chance to fall in love with wang zihao or hiroto, they were non-entities. bak doha, jung mingyu, toyonaga takuto - they were the untalented clowns. cha woongki and seo won were there for comic relief and extra fruitiness. etc etc etc.

though again i'd slightly disagree with this in the case of boys planet and zerobaseone (though i'm a stan so you're free to disagree with me haha) - that group turned out to be pretty well-balanced imo. it's mainly a case of:

1. this being the second season of the planet series, as well as the gents' season. of course mnet knew what they were doing here
2. mnet highlighting some pretty skilled contestants as their faves. sure, the most talented people weren't always highlighted - hui hwanhee and jay (top vocals) were paid dust by mnet, as were zihao hiroto yedam and kuanjui (top dancers). but people would consider sung hanbin and park gunwook two of the top dancers in the show along with the names i mentioned. and they debuted. you also had matthew - a pretty good dancer who could carry a tune and not sound half bad while doing it, and yujin - a great dancer for a 16 year old who's been doing it for just about 2 years now. additionally hanbin and hao are both generally well-rounded performers, good singers (hao wins in this category though), good dancers (hanbin wins this one), and charismatic centers.
3. mnet announcing a solo song as the prize for the 1st place winner. they wanted people to vote for someone with the skillset to do that. not that they ever really promoted hao's solo song after he debuted (which sucks)

this is something i strongly agree with though. the initial stages are obviously a set up for like everyone involved. having kang hyewon cover good day, or bak doha cover my house, is nothing but a set up.

the signal song checks too get me. the songs are too high pitched imo, and to expect them to sing that while dancing when most idols these days usually have some sort of vocal support (not saying 100% lipsync but y'know, some support, not 100% live either)? impossible. in boys planet you had vocal mentor onestar scold bak doha, a 0 star (or f class) contestant a baritone who had 0 idol training prior to the show as an acting trainee, telling him that he can't just sing low pitched stuff all the time and that he had to sing high at some point... when the song in question is absolutely comfortable for me, a girl, to sing... but then most boy group songs are written so that their female fans can sing along to them. that system imo kinda sucks to me.

that said... bak doha was anyway there just for shits and giggles mnet didn't really care, which is why you have onestar, a reputed vocal coach who has worked with exo and onf, two bgs known for their singing prowess, just straight up scold someone for not being able to sing. which is as crazy as a reputed math teacher scolding someone who dropped out of school in 8th grade for not being able to do trigonometry. it's all scripted bs, all in mnet's hands.

and yes the assigned songs are always horrible, if mnet include a bp song in the next instalment of planet istg i will show up with protest trucks

sadly, I'm pretty sure that they picked up the song for her. Anyhow, she was doomed from the start. She should have known better than to go there. Also, the bit about her driving herself there and getting lost.....righttttt She's been at that building a gazillion times for variety shows. In this day and age of google maps, it was laughable at best!
