I dunno. Is it really "big but not too big" when the group is one of the top groups/sometimes arguably the top group (talking about Exo here)? Every management ever has made bad decisions relating to their artists, sometimes they just suck and sometimes it can be hard to tell what will lead to the best result in the end. Hindsight is 20/20 after all. So in general I feel that it's not as simple as SM didn't make this one Exo choice well in hindsight, that means they hate Exo and are sabotaging them. The only time sabotaging would make sense to me is if SM knows they're planning on suing them for work stuff or things like that to avoid repercussions.

i dont know The failure to even try EXO in the West and just give it to bts has always seemed super stupid.

i seem to remember EXO fans at the time were livid they did not try and EXO has English speakers.

It doesn't seem absurd to put focus on the main market (which at the time was Korea first and Japan second) rather than drop it to focus on a market where no one had made it that big yet and therefore there wasn't a huge precedent for success. In the end maybe it was the right choice to target the west but I don't see it as a incredibly obvious thing that anyone could figure out before it happened. Id be surprised if the west would have been more profitable than East Asia anyways, even now. So I still don't see Exo not promoting as much in the west as a sign that SM hates them and its dragging them down on purpose, it still seems more likely to me that they had a different path in mind.

Two possible explanations are (a) SM is nefarious/cunning and (b) SM is incompetent. I think the latter is far more likely.

I think SM already has what they'd want from this more so than any other company and that's when you think of their artists you think of SM and most people don't stop at 1 SM group while companies like YG struggle getting that kind of crossover so SM has become a brand in itself pretty much.

SM also just screams old with their practices and when the international market opened up they seemed stuck in their ways and let upcoming competitors walk right through that open door only realising the money they left on the table when their artists started having to chase after others which hadn't happened for a while.
