Been struggling lately with overstimulation and it is ruining my workflow.
I have barely gotten 1 page done in about 2 weeks for school and I am STRUGGLING!!!
WHEN I GET understimulated I end up overstimulating myself to fix it and overcorrect and then can't settle.

Overstimulated = complete solitude, SILENCE, and eyes closed seems to help for a few minutes
Underestimated = cry (first step), do 3 things at once (me yesterday)

My best advice is to tap into something that grounds you. For me that's watching movies that give me certain feelings or listening to certain songs (such as In my head by Mad Tsai that one's a banger). It can also be reading something I've already read before.

Thank you! I'll try doing that tomorrow!

how does one get under or over stimulated?
If you are neurotypical it's not a commonly experienced thing unless you are just generally hypersensitive.

Understimulation is kind of hard to explain unless you've experienced it and I don't believe I can put it into words well.

But overstimulation is so much happening at once that trying to focus is incredibly frustrating. Not to mention unbelievably hard to sit still and focus when you have so much occurring around you. It can also become actual frustration because you become incredibly overwhelmed and unable to function as a result. It is very hard to calm down from it at times.

For example, if I go to a library I have to play music quietly in my headphones or the outside noises of people whispering, chatting, rustling paper, coffee machine bubbling, and the sound of people typing can get under my skin and make me unable to focus ebcause its so much noise all at once even if it isn't loud-it's too much going on that I have no control over and frustration kicks in like I said above.

interesting
and how do you go about "fixing" (i guess that might not be the right word) "handling" such issues?
I see from overstimulation - it means there's too much going around you and it bothers you - I can understand that
is it the opposite from understimulation that everythign around you is "too quiet"

Understimulation is basically there aren't enough things going on around you to hold your interest - you feel perpetually bored even if you may need to do something. You might also be very tired, suffer from lack of motivation, or experience restlessness with no way to release that energy.

You could describe it as being "too quiet" yes, but know that it's a lot more than just the sounds of the environment you're currently in that have gotten you to that point - it's mental and physical.

makes sense...obviously I cannot relate as I don't have such issues but does it happen a lot?

interesting...how do you manage such issues my friend?
Not well usually. Understimulation is the worst for me because it's always something I feel internally to a very high degree, where with overstimulation sometimes there are workarounds (physically leaving a situation, putting headphones in, and I'm no stranger to sitting in my car for hours on end to avoid something that will be hard for me). To curve my current understimulation I'm giving myself a project to install shelves in my room and put things I like on those shelves (hopefully within this next week). I'm hoping that, by having this activity, it'll release some dopamine and be what I need to feel better

Adding to this-the same applies to overstimulation. I used a lot of sounds as examples but I can feel something scratchy against my skin, while having somethings tuck under my nails and then also having someone talk to me while others are talking in the background.

Mine tends to be with music. I get understimulated without some sort of background noise that keeps me comfy or I get overwhelmed because my usual music is playing but other things are happening around it. It sounds so weird but I struggle without music but othertimes my music on top of everything makes me more stressed out.

I just have to stop doing things and stop being around so much all at once. But sometimes that is hard to manage because I get too easily understimulated if I don't do something for a bit so it's a double-edged sword for me. I will say @Day did a fantastic job describing understimulation.

I slip into it too easily if things are too quiet. Then I legit do nothing...all day and get sad. Either way, both make it so I can't do what I need to do on a daily basis. I struggle with keeping them both in control.

I also assume then this is an issue that can't be fixed with medication or something like that (I apologize if you've heard this question a million times before from people who are ignorant of such things)

damn this seems to affect your daily life quiet dramatically - I guess you have a hard time just doing normal things such as studying or working with you get ever over or under stimulated

Yes. ADHD is a son of a bitch and not silly like some people like to make it out to be. There is medication but I think it can only do so much and also I am personally and medically not allowed to take the medications because they drastically effected me.
