Human generations are taken at 20 years ie the time it takes a baby to mature enough to raise another although current trends are pushing that upwards.

GG dominate this since they have the shorter life span. How its defined is up for debate. 7 years is a above average life span for a gg if we carried the human example out generations wold be super short say 2-3 years. That would be unwieldy as a standard but i think some generations are that short.
The bigger problem is that bg have a life span in the decades, so it skews the thinking GOD, Shinwa and other 1st gen bg are still active.
People want neat chunks that encompass both genders. That is how you get the media type eras that many use namely.
1 1997-2003
2 2003- 2012
3 2012- 2019

personally i use when 2 of the bigger companies debut a new gg the generation changed. So i am in 5th gen gg soon :).

1 1997 - 2003 gg basically died out until the grace and jewelry
2 2003 -2009/10 fx rainbow 2009 miss a 2010
3 2009/10 - 2014/15 RV 2014, T 2015 but snsd wg kara 21 all basically died/ transitioned in 2014
4 2014/15 - 2019/20 itzy and izone sm will sooner or later drop a group.
