I'm not a sports person, never have been but I get the reason big games take place during holidays is money. You have a large audience at home that can attend and watch. It's all about those advertising dollars! Because people are in a good mood they are more likely to see products advertised in a positive light.

My country does nothing like this on holidays, rare exception is if it’s a charity event.

Simple answer lots of eyes at home.
Crazy amounts of add revenue to be made.
Thus football on thanksgiving both pro and college.
Basketball on christmas ( unless its a sunday then both football and basketball.
the entire week of new years is college football.
