Something i never thought i would say. It wasn't something super long but not smth super short either. I read it online, in book format it has 320ish pages.
The book is named
"Over the Fence" by Melanie Moreland!
It's a quiet lovestory about two neighbours who get to know eachother without actually seeing eachother because of their huge fence between their houses. ML is an IT specialist living alone, with a barren house and yard. He doesn't have much family or friends, and his love life is the occasional bumping ugly with work colleagues (no strings attached). One day he smells some amazing roast from the new neighbour's yard. The FL (neighbour) is a reasearcher for cancer treatment, who cooks amazing food but is also really insecure for some reason. After one compliment to the chef, an exchange of food over the fence and more days of getting to know eachother with a barrier in between them, ML is ready to jump over to meet her. However, they both have secrets they need to reveal before anything of a "relationship" can florish.
I think it was good, but it was too Hallmarky.

I really liked the book. It was very pleasant and the characters are really likeable. HOWEVER, the plot, WHERE ID THE PLOT??? The basic meet-and-greet is cute, and they banther a lot. But when it comes to resolving conflicts it gets brushed under the rug in max 2 chapters.
To spoil a little bit, FL's family (brother and father) abuse her ever since their mother died. She died in a car crash while going to get her daughter medicine. She was blamed for it her entire life, and also bullied for her weight too. A.k.a. she is an incurable doormat and people pleaser.
ML has been in prison for causing an accident as a teenager, and killing his little brother. It wasn't intentional but all his family shun him after and they never contact eachother, being moved away.
These imo are pretty big traumas to overcome. And how do they do it? Well, let me tell you. FL's brother is the reason the couple first meet. The brother screams and abuses FL in her house and ML jumps over the fence to save her. He finds out about everything in her past eventually. The solution? They have a cop friend who goes to the brother's workplace and threatens him a little bit.
ML's past is only brought up in the last 3 chapters. He takes THAAAAAT LONG to come clean. And it's not even him who comes clean. The FL finds his prison papers when he goes to his house for some clothes for him. This mf wouldve lied about his past until he could. And the FL???? She forgives him in point blank 2 sentences.
I do believe ppl can change, but Oh My God Woman, AT LEAST PUT SOME DISTANCE BETWEEN U OR ASK MORE QUESTIONS. In the end ML finds his sister's whereabouts thanks to FL's help and they reconcile.
The End.
