you are so strongHow did you decide what to do with your life?
It made sense, considering my interests at the time; made my choice at 16. Also picked up a book about it in high school. Though I didn't understand some of the content, the profession still seemed right.
What (if any) was the catalyst for making such a decision?
I literally couldn't see myself doing anything else. At that time.
Do you have regrets about it now?
Hm... I say yes and no. I got to follow my biggest passion (at that time back then) to get a degree. It was a great experience where I was out of my comfort zone.
But I'm at the point where the passion is just a job. I leave work and don't want to consume anything that has to do with the industry.
Are you happy?
Heh. No, I'm not. I actually found a bunch of old projects from uni the other day. That was when I realized that I'm not working towards certain goals I have, the reasons I chose the profession. So I'm at that point where I'm reevaluating my choices. Trying to figure out what I want to do next.
Is keeping my passions separate from my job more ideal for me? Maybe - I'm still thinking about it. Because it honestly could just be the tasks I have at that particular job.
Anyway, that's where I am now. An important thing to remember is that people change. Not liking my choices doesn't mean I failed. I don't think I'm at the point where I've decided what I wanna do with my life, and that's okay. Highschoolers aren't supposed to have it all figured out anyway.
It sounds like those small steps you've been taking have led you to a sound place so far, I hope that you're able to get a job doing something you like that also pays wellWhen I was in high school back in the late 2000s-early 2010s, I honestly didn’t know what I wanted to do career-wise. I knew I wanted to go to university and get my Bachelor's in what I was passionate about, which was history. The goal sounded reasonable at that time.
Instead, I procrastinated during college application season in my senior year of HS. So, I applied to my local community college and pursued my Associate's in History.
Even though it took me 4 years to do it (I failed and repeated a few classes), I got my Associate's. During my 1 year break, I realized that I had no idea what I could do with an Associate’s since I didn’t realize I learned no practical skills as a history major.
I never talk about it much, but I have always been interested in writing since I was a preteen. Even though most of my focus was on fan fiction, I enjoyed writing. What I did in 2016 was go back to school and pursue my bachelor’s in a major that combines one of my interests and also gain the practical skills I needed to learn. That was Communications and Media Studies.
It took me 2 years to do and I felt accomplished. While I did struggle to get an actual job, I was able to figure out a way to get some type of experience even if that meant volunteering. The volunteer work that I have done was working on two different K-Pop forums from 2018 to 2022.
I was able to use some of the skills I learned at University while volunteering on those K-Pop forums. In between that, I was able to do an internship for a local online publication for 10 months.
While I don’t currently have a job yet, I am working with someone who has been helping me take those steps to find a job. What I have been doing is sprucing up my resume and doing interest surveys so I can pinpoint what interests me.
I’m not going to lie, I have made questionable decisions back in the past that I easily regret. Also part of me wished that I could’ve put more effort into job searching and tried to get an entry-level job based on what I liked to do at an earlier age.
For the most part, I’m taking small steps and I do feel my current efforts will pay off at some point even though I’m in my early 30s.
I think wanting to be the change you never experienced is one of the most powerful reasons you can haveI knew I wanted to work with kids because I wanted to help kids in the way I wish I was. I constantly question if I am doing this for all the right reasons and if it’s worth it.
I want to be someone’s light, the reason why life may not appear to be so dark all the timeI think wanting to be the change you never experienced is one of the most powerful reasons you can have![]()
I'm so happy that you're so happy and having such a great timeSince early this year, I thought why not apply to become a volunteer at an op shop just to get some work experience so that I can have it included on my resume in the future.
It was actually my employment consultant from a job provider that I had last year that recommended me to apply for volunteering roles in order for me to get some relevant experience that I would need whenever I apply for jobs in the future. Actually, it wasn’t until I decided to start applying for a volunteer face to face role since early this year. Prior to that I was usually hesitant to apply for these kinds of roles because I was scared of the challenges that I was gonna face when it comes to having to be with other volunteers and having to talk to customers. But actually when I started my very first shift volunteering there, the managers and the other volunteers actually turned out to be really nice people and I found them easy to talk to.
Now, almost 2 months later, I think it was the best decision to that I’ve ever made this year despite having a lot of doubts and fear of the challenges I knew I was gonna face the whole time, and I do like working in there. :)
It was actually after one of my close friends told me that they got a call from the same op shop that they applied a volunteer role at that actually lead me to start applying for it too without hesitation, all thanks to her. I think I be should have myself too for deciding to take the risk and put myself out there.
I’ve also started getting into penpaling too, hopefully to make some long term connections with people I’ll be penpaling with. Can’t wait till I can send over some letters to them and receive them soon! And hopefully that continues for me and those people I’m gonna be penpals with for the long term!
I think you're great at thatI want to be someone’s light, the reason why life may not appear to be so dark all the time
Yeah. I just revised and enhanced my entire resume not long ago. Now, I need to look for job leads. It sounds like those small steps you've been taking have led you to a sound place so far, I hope that you're able to get a job doing something you like that also pays wellSome of the advice I've heard lately is "why is there such a rush to get where you're going? what's the end goal? death?" and that reminded me that yeah, life is just a moment of time from birth until death. There is no finish line, no due dates. Everyone goes at their own pace and I think that's wonderful

I hope it always stays that wayI'm so happy that you're so happy and having such a great timeI hope that, no matter what challenges may come your way, you always have that group of supportive people around you
