the ultimate question becomes what is kpop in the first place...
the issue isn't who is or is not kpop but rather because different people have different ideas on what makes something kpop and thus people might have disagreements on what groups fall under the kpop umbrella

I was about to say this, people were commenting on their Japanese promotions wondering why a KPop group with English songs was promoting in Japan..... ummm guys they are Japanese ...
seriously like i dont know why people dont get it? they are all japanese and they sing in english, there is literally nothing korean about that :susPepe: sure, they promote in korea, but that doesnt make them part of the Korean industry?

&Team, they are under Hybe’s Japan label, not their Korean label despite having a few Korean songs.
I thought people knew that :susPepe:

Exactly this.

I find it interesting that xh has been brought as not a kpop band when I always thought they were. They're under a k-pop label, promote to the k-pop community and on k-pop oriented broadcasts. I think my definition of something 'k-pop' is if it has been accepted into the community, because genre only becomes one when a community is built around. What's stopping western pop and swedish pop from becoming one genre are their demographics. To me anything the k-pop communtiy has accepted and shared can be classified as k-pop. But I know people have disagreements upon different languages and where the base of their promotions are (which to me is redudant. Boyfriend and Rainbow promoted in Japan for a lot of their careers, are they considered J-pop?)

At the end of the day though I don't think our definitions mean much. If we enjoy the music and the companies still have us on a tight grip then it really doesn't matter to the community

apparently this

to me there has to be some connection to SK - whether it's the members, the language, the production team in SK or promotion in SK or the members trained in SK which make something kpop

I kind of agree with that but if the community at large accepts a group it's hard to argue with it. I doubt a lot of people will think OneBling is K-pop for example.

but communities can be divided like for example
a lot of kpop fans thought niziu (prior to their korean debut) was a japanese group but a lot of their japanese fans consider them very much a kpop group

But those are two different communities, does it really matter?

My definition of K-Pop (as a collective term) is Korean popular music. So virtually any song and style can be K-Pop if it's popular enough in Korea. Of course you can divide the term 'K-Pop' info different genres: K-Pop, K-Rock, K-Metal... and so on.

I don't like categorizations in music, so I only mention specific music genres when I need to (for example, when I want to tell other people what artists I listen to). For me personally there are only two types of music: songs that I like, and songs that I don't like.

hmmm....Mariah Carey's All I want for Xmas is You charts every year around Christmas I wouldn't call that kpop
there's also a lot of western artists that chart well if they have a popular song but I also wouldn't call that kpop

I agree that kpop is more of an industry as oppose to a genre

that is true but there's also certain people what would categories it and for some people kpop is unique and part of their hobby and they want to make sure what is kpop stays kpop if that makes any sense...

If Mariah Carey would live and work in Korea, then 'All I Want For Xmas' would be a K-Pop song (probably parts of the lyrics would be in Korean language too). For the Korean market, the song would probably sound different too.

An example for a Western artist that is a K-Pop idol: AleXa. Alexaundra Christine Schneiderman, born in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She lives in Korea now. Of course, if she would still live in the US and release her songs there, she wouldn't be a K-Pop artist. On the contrary, there's Rina Sawayama. Born in Niigata, Japan. She lives in London, works in London. Would you call her songs J-Pop?

Yep, I don't like categorizations in music. For myself. On the other hand, if a friend tolds me something about Brit Pop, I know how it might sound. If a friend talks about K-Pop, I know that this music most likely sounds different than Brit Pop. Such sorting of musical genres helps to describe a specific music style. But in my private, when I'm alone and I want to listen to music, I don't think: "I want to listen to K-Pop now, then I want to listen to US-Pop, then I want to listen to J-Rock!" Instead I think: "I want to listen to aespa, Lana del Rey, King Gnu."
