A group who is self produced may not be better than one who is not. This is not to say any group is untalented, but instead saying that sometimes a song writer can miss… whether that be someone who’s job it is to write song, or an idol who has songwriting credits. In addition, songwriters are specifically trained in the art whereas idols are trained in vocals and dancing. So credit should be given where credit is due​

I guess it depends in what area? Obviously writing your songs doesn’t make you a better singer or dancer
But I feel like people connect more with your music, if you write your own songs about your feelings and experiences

I feel like artists like Taylor Swift wouldn’t be half as famous if she wouldn’t write her own songs

I went thru a phase where i thought singer songwriters ect were better.
but that is not true at all anymore.

The talent to take another's words and thoughts and make them come alive is really crazy.
in fact i may respect it more in many ways.

Generally independency means an artist can do their own things. There's more room for musical experiences when you are not mainstream-dependent. Timeline's also different (no one told you when you need to finish a song).

I guess the most popular K-Pop example of a soloist producing her own songs and MVs is Sunmi. I didn't check the latest album details, but Younha did her own things in the past. ID: Earth is independent too. These artists know how to write good songs. But even if you produce most of your own songs, you can still hire someone for the songwriting process. If you are very popular, songwriters might even contact you: "Hey, here's a song I wrote. It could fit your signature sound. "

I don't think that a group isn't necessarily better or worse when they write their own songs. K-Pop companies generally hire production teams with a sense for popular music and MV trends. First and foremost K-Pop companies want to make money, Indie artists want to express themselves.

My take on this self-produced vs not-self produced is based on 2 examples:

'Nothing Compares to U' by Sinead O'Connor/Prince

&


'Time Spent Walking Through Memories' by Taeyeon/Nell.

1 is just my opinion tat the cover version by Taeyeon is more evocative, but the version of 'Nothing Compares to U' by O'Connor was a song tat no one (or few/not many) knew was a Prince song before it blew up.

So I love singer/songwriter/musicians but non self produced songs can be just as good/better(or at least more popular/loved).​

it's always a nice bonus if the artist writes their own stuff, but if they don't and their music's good... then their music's good, full stop. i'll enjoy it just as well. and if they do and their music's bad, then while i'll respect them for putting their music out there it just won't be the music i'd ever willingly listen to. and that's fine.

basically for me my enjoyment of the music is quite separate from whether the artist themself writes their music or not.

I agree. Like, Billie Eilish writes her own songs, but a lot of them, like Bad Guy for example, are just trash, if I'm being completely honest. Sometimes, the best music comes from non-songwriters.

I agree with this, too. It does also go the opposite way: just because an artist DOESN'T self-produce, doesn't mean at all that it's going to be bad music. One Direction had others write some of their songs, but they were the biggest boy band for the time they were still a group! At the end of the day, only one thing matters: the music.

but that depends on what one means by "better"

if one doesn't take into account the subjectiveness of musical preferences then of course being self-produced is better - you keep your royalties and you have an additional talent/skill that non-self produced artists don't. You get to control your own fate - you don't have to rely on others. You don't need the company to find producers. When the group eventually disbands (yes all groups eventually will disband) you have an extra skill which you can put to good use

if better means better music well since music is subjective one cannot make that argument that self produced music is better since it's SUBJECTIVE

People just always look for way to put other down, so if the artist they like is self producing, they use it as an attack on everyone else
