Thanks for the suggestion. I actually don't see users mentioning themselves a problem. Some users are more quiet and don't have close friends to nominate them so I feel like it kind of gives everyone a chance this way. The events team will still discuss the suggestions though so even if people continously vote for themselves or their friends, that doesn't mean they will get the award. Some people seem to be confused but we're not giving the award to the user that gets the most suggestions. We will make sure they fit the criteria first. So although it feels strange to use, I guess we can say we're looking for quality over quantity. So if you want to vote for someone, you can vote for them once and just give a very good reason why you think they should be awarded and that gives them a better chance than just nominating your friend or yourself 10 times.

But I will still discuss this with the events team and if everyone prefers to change it so that username is a requirement, I'll make the changes. :)
