Breaking: NewJeans Announces Departure From ADOR

The five members of NewJeans are leaving ADOR.

Earlier on November 13, NewJeans sent a certification of contents to their agency ADOR, demanding that ADOR rectify all significant breaches of the exclusive contracts within 14 days and warning, “If our demands for rectification are not accepted, we will terminate our exclusive contracts.”

On November 28, Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein held an emergency press conference.

The members took turns explaining the group’s position:

Before we begin, we wanted to reiterate that the YouTube live we held in September and the certification of contents we sent two weeks with demands for rectification were decided and prepared together by all five of us.

Work hours have passed, and less than four hours remain until midnight, but no rectification has been made, so the five of us will terminate our contracts immediately at midnight on November 29.

When our exclusive contracts our terminated, the five of us will no longer be artists of ADOR. Breaking away from ADOR, we plan on freely carrying out the activities that we sincerely want. However, we will carry out the promised and contracted activities we have scheduled already. We will also carry out the contracted advertisement deals as planned. We wanted to relay that we are really truly thankful to the advertisers who always support us and that they do not have to worry. Minji concluded:

I believe that a person’s mental attitude is very important. A courageous person can change the world and live their life more independently. I don’t think everyone has the courage to take action for whatever they set their mind on rather than measuring how much they are capable of achieving. For me, it was possible because I also had Bunnies, our fans, who are by my side, and my members, and I gained a lot of courage from seeing Min Hee Jin. Members of girl group NewJeans will leave their agency ADOR and fight to keep the name NewJeans, the members said in an emergency press conference on Thursday night.

“We are not going to give up on our name, NewJeans, but we will still remain NewJeans at heart even if we can’t keep our name,” member Hyein said.

“We never broke any rules,” Haerin said. “We did nothing but try our best. It makes no sense that we have to pay them the contract breach fee. They are the ones at fault. HYBE and ADOR are the ones responsible.”

When further asked by reporters whether the members’ argument was legally sound, the PR agency cut the questions short and said that further announcements would be made after consultations with legal attorneys.

The 14-day ultimatum was sent to ADOR on Nov. 13, which the company received on Nov. 14. The list of things demanded by NewJeans included getting an apology from Belift Lab for having a manager tell its artist to “ignore” NewJeans’ member Hanni in May this year and reinstating former CEO of ADOR Min Hee-jin. HYBE had already hinted at the fact that it would not bring Min back as the CEO.

Min said that she will quit ADOR on Nov. 20.

Members were “welcome to the idea of working with Min anywhere she is,” but did not specify whether or not they had any specific plans worked out with Min.

“We would like to work with Min Hee-jin if that is possible,” Minji said. “But we are going to carry out all the activities we are scheduled to, including the advertisements.”

Minji emphasized that the whole brawl with ADOR, and perhaps Min’s conflict with HYBE at large, all began due to the lack of respect between people.

“It is courage that changes the world,” Minji said. “Only people who have the will to change their lives get to. We are here because of the fans, the Bunnies that love us, the members and Min Hee-jin. We know that our decision to protect all five of us will not come easy, but nothing gets better if you don’t stand up for yourself.”

“We hope that people get to work and live, whether that be in a school or a workplace, where they respect each other without harassment,” she added.

NewJeans will disclose the content of ADOR’s letters to the press on Friday morning, the members said.

Girl group NewJeans revealed the full 22-page response from ADOR to reporters on Friday, as promised during a press conference held the previous day.

"We are deeply saddened by how we were not given the chance to meet with the artists to discuss plans for next year and by how things turned out," read the letter, signed by Kim Ju-young, the current CEO of ADOR.

The letter was delivered in print on Thursday afternoon and sent via email at 7 p.m. The members of NewJeans had called for an emergency press conference at 6 p.m., prior to opening the letter from ADOR.

"Some of the requests made by the artists were too abstract or overly broad, going beyond our authority or legal responsibilities," ADOR said. "Nevertheless, we will take all possible measures to address their needs as their management company. We are willing to share progress updates regularly if necessary, and we hope to maintain communication with the artists."

"It is the artists who are refusing to discuss plans for their activities next year," the agency continued. "Out of respect for them, we have been preparing plans without forcing them into meetings. We emphasize that we are not only capable but also committed to fulfilling our responsibilities as their agency and supporting their entertainment activities."

ADOR disputed the K-pop girl group’s termination claims, issuing an official statement saying that NewJeans have no grounds to announce their departure from the agency and its parent company, stating that they still want Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, Minji, and Hyein to continue working with the company.

In their full statement, ADOR expressed regret over the press conference held without proper review or agreement on the alleged details shared, while also claiming that NewJeans have no valid reason to announce the termination of their contracts. They stated that they had not broken any terms of the group’s contract and that the claim of trust being broken serves as an invalid reason to end their contract with the label.

“We regret that a press conference to announce the termination of the exclusive contract was planned and conducted even before receiving a response to the certification of contents and without sufficient review. ADOR, as a part of the exclusive contracts, has not violated the contracts, and claiming that trust has been unilaterally broken does not constitute grounds for termination,” the agency mentioned in an official press statement, released today (November 29).

Continuing their statement, ADOR mentioned that they confirmed that the contracts with NewJeans are indeed still in effect, and that they expect the group to continue their activities as planned. They further added that they had tried to arrange meetings with the members but were unsuccessful, sharing their hopes to have “open and honest discussions” about the matter moving forward. “We hope that even now, we can open our hearts and have sincere conversations together. ADOR will do our best to support NewJeans in their activities and help them grow further as global artists.”

This serves as the latest update on the ongoing legal saga between NewJeans, ADOR, and HYBE, which has been going on over the past few months. Earlier this November 13, 2024, the K-pop five-piece formally notified the agencies of their intent to terminate their contracts in November through a YouTube video — setting a 14-day deadline for the agencies to rectify specific issues, including the return of former CEO Min Hee Jin.

The group accused the agencies of using several technicalities to evade the responsibility of the group, which marks the latest incident in which NewJeans has expressed dissatisfaction with their treatment by their agencies due to unfair practices and a lack of support. NewJeans sent a legal notice to HYBE, listing their five demands that they hope be met by November 27, or else they were to proceed with the termination of their contract with ADOR.

The aforementioned demands included an “apology for bullying allegations against a protocol manager, removal of photos/videos used without consent, resolution of damages related to chart manipulation, and addressing a dispute with a director they worked with.” Once the deadline for their demands had passed, the group held a press conference to address the situation and announced their next steps and termination, explaining: “The reason we are leaving ADOR is very simple,” adding, “ADOR neither has the will nor the ability to protect NewJeans.”
