What's amazing is that they managed to squeeze a ridiculously long article out of it.

I'm guessing the author loved to write long term papers in college. (I'm the opposite -- hated writing anything that took more than a couple of paragraphs.)

People who claim Kpop includes more and more English for Western validation miss the big picture that most people hear a song in a language they don't understand and are immediately going to disengage without giving it a chance.

For Kpop artists like Blackpink who aim for having global appeal then they're going to cast a much wider net across fans by singing in English where as artists primarily popular in Asia like Gfriend don't have that incentive so even as Viviz their sound is still pretty Kpop.

I see, but if you look at the list you posted, majority of albums (even the ones with more than 20 mil), mainly come from before the 2000s.. and non of them from recent years, I think it's not really realistic anymore to go back to those numbers

i am using it as more of a gage on real popularity.
Clearly the multi copy buying of kpop albums inflates the numbers to the point that i would say Adele's 3 mill and change represents more people than either 17 or bts.

For a kpop act to break thru it would take something extraordinary like a 20mill number.

Older acts had radio and a shared music experience to access the world.
Music now lives in Silos.

i would struggle to name 10 American artists who did not have hits in the 90's early 2000's or earlier.
That is probably true for anyone outside of the silo they listen too.

Heck i would not be able to name many male kpop songs let alone 1/2 - 2/3 the female ones.
