I was hanging with some friends and someone made a tongue-in-cheek reference to Charles Manson, and one friend had never heard of this guy.

It's funny what seems like casual pop culture knowledge and stumbling across someone who it means nothing to.

Copied from wiki:
Charles Milles Manson (né Maddox; November 12, 1934 – November 19, 2017) was an American criminal, cult leader, and musician who led the Manson Family, a cult based in California in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Some cult members committed a series of at least nine murders at four locations in July and August 1969. In 1971, Manson was convicted of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder for the deaths of seven people, including the film actress Sharon Tate. The prosecution contended that, while Manson never directly ordered the murders, his ideology constituted an overt act of conspiracy.

To be honest, this doesn't quite highlight what a whack-a-doo he is. There's a documentary on Netflix that recently dropped that's pretty interesting.

Oh, what's the most interesting one, do you think? Jonestown and Heavens Gate always stick out to me, but it's interesting seeing how those tactics get applied to other areas, like political cults.

I listened to a podcast with Janja Lalich who was part of a political cult in the 70s/80s, and her definition of cults was pretty interesting: "They 'espouse an all-encompassing belief system', 'exhibit excessive devotion to the leader', 'avoid criticism of the group and its leader', and 'feel disdain for non-members'."

Heavens Gate was the one that came to mind as well. The idea that people would go for that stuff is pretty insane, but also sad and kind of scary.

For the political cults part that just sounds like modern day politics as a whole. Not all people are like that ofc, but the amount that are is not small :coronawimwim: Cults in general though are very human nature though. There’ll always be some kinds of cults because they prey on basic human desires and fears. Just thinking about that is scary on its own.

I think that's why it's so interesting to me: like, with the right circumstances, most people can be made susceptible to a gradual shift in their own values. And the tactics that make people shift towards the cult also make it really hard to extract someone. It's so scary and sad for the victims.

I read a few books about Manson and watched some documentaries. There are at least three good books about him:

- 'The Family' by Ed Sanders. Critics wrote that there is a bit too much chit-chat and speculations but Sanders told the Manson story from the perspective of the Beatnik writer he was. If you are interested in the 'Flower Power era' too like me, it's probably one of the best books about Manson you can get.

- 'Helter Skelter' by Vincent Bugliosi. Bugliosi was the prosecutor in the 1970 Manson trials. The book is full of firsthand informations about the Manson murders.

- 'The Secret History of the Sixties' by Tom O'Neill. This book influenced Quentin Tarantino, he mentioned it a few times in podcasts after 'Once Upon A Time In Hollywood' was released.

There's also a very interesting website about Manson and 'The Family':

If you can't get enough from that topic, there's a YouTube channel with original material about Manson.

MVP, my library has Helter Skelter on audio. I think he's just interesting in particular, given what a charisma hole he visually is and what he compelled his followers to do.

For me he is interesting because of the impact he had on the American culture. Having said that, there are more interesting serial killers than those Manson Family members: Jack The Ripper, Ted Bundy, The Zodiac Killer, Ed Gein, Richard Ramírez...
