The US capital, Washington DC, is one. That one probably surprises exactly no one. But the second one is less known. It’s Monrovia, the capital of Liberia. Monrovia is named after the US president James Monroe. In the first part of the 1800s, Liberia was intended to become a place that freed slaves from North America could move to. This idea was especially attractive to northerners in the US who found slavery wrong, but were opposed to the idea of society having freed slaves in their social and workplace settings. Monroe supported the founding of the city and country as president. In the end, the idea failed and instead slavery was abolished in the US. The failure of this for of Liberia is likely in large part due to the a fact that despite the former slaves having been descended from west Africans (a lot of the time), they themselves felt little connection there, given that they and some of their ancestors had all been born in the US. Therefore, they didn’t have much of a connection with people and land in West Africa. But the name stuck.

Currently one And if we count Philly then you also have to count NYC, Trenton (NJ), and Annapolis (Maryland) at minimum, and debatably Princeton (NJ), York (Penn), Lancaster (Penn), and Baltimore (Maryland) too.

If we go 1789 and on, there’s at least NYC still (1789-1790, and site of first inauguration of a US president). But I’d argue that at minimum, we should count Treaty of Paris and on, since it for all intents and purposes acknowledges the US as an independent nation. Until 1789 it was under the articles of confederation, but the country was still the US, so any capitals that had been declared official capitals of the US then count as former US capitals to me, since the country was still the US After all, would you apply the same logic to other places? For example, would you say that France has never had a monarchy, since the last king died in 1793, while the current constitution was only ratified in 1958?
