I like making them, but sometimes i get really sidetracked :haylul: Today I got sidetracked watching videos of people speaking Scottish English and looking at rhoticity of English overall :haylul: I’ve already done extra research for another thread too, so I can post it whenever without many extra side tangents. But hey, worth it :sanapray:

TIL I learned the word for "refers to the pronunciation of the /r/ sound in English, specifically whether it's retained or dropped in certain positions, like at the end of words. Accents that pronounce the /r/ in all positions are considered rhotic, while those that drop it in certain positions (like after a vowel and before a consonant) are non-rhotic."

Curious if any other words relating to pronunciations of letters(but enuf to Google it rn)

There’s actually an absurd amount of terminology for pronunciation, and it applies to many many languages, including rhoticism. Some of the most common terminology for R sounds are things like alveolar trill, tap, or flap, uvular trill, fricative, and approximant, retroflex approximant, bunched R, tapped R, flapped R, apical R, vocalized R, ect ect. And this is just for some possible R sounds. Many of these aren’t talked about as much by English speakers as Rhotic vs non Rhotic R sounds because a lot of these aren’t that present in the most well known English dialects (you won’t get trills in most forms of American, British, Canadian, or Australian English), and because some changes are harder to notice (to Americans, rhotic vs non rhotic Rs are easier to notice than bunched Rs vs alveolar tapped Rs, just because many would assume alveolar tapped Rs are a D or T sound rather than R). You get this stuff for all the sounds found in languages around the world, which makes it super interesting, but also hard because of the sheer amount of terminology there is for phonetics :lisalaugh:

I knew about alveolar somehow(or at least the word referred to referred to the mouth I think when pronouncing words/letters, similar to glottal(?). Hvnt kept track. I meant more Latin or latin-sounding terms like rhoticict/rhoticism.still not googling even tho I am interested in etymology/terms such as rhotic even if I can think of examples rn. Interesting n thnx ahsoka

Rhotic actually comes from Greek, many articulation descriptors like trill and approximant and rhotic are. :sanapray: Latin terms tend to be more for categories like vowel and syllable. Now I’ll actually stop, I couldn’t resist sharing since I knew the origin of that specifically :lisalaugh:
