I never do, it’s either NYC or New York City for me. New York for me is only the state. I wouldn’t eliminate city for Panama City, Oklahoma City, Mexico City, ect either because it would feel too vague also.

Yeah I was just saying that that’s the reason I don’t use it. I’ve heard people use New York and it usually is easy enough to clarify in the case of a misunderstanding

I never understood the NY thing

I don’t say NYC enough out loud but I guess I do default to New York simply because it’s how my family talks about sports cities so it kinda stuck i guess

I live far enough away from New York that, in most conversations about the place (which are very few) "New York" and "New York City" are effectively interchangeable.

Like, if a friend said "I'm going to New York this fall" they almost certainly mean "I'm doing touristy things in NYC itself."

New York for me. if I wanted to talk about the state itself, I'd say New York State

From here, New York is almost always referred to the city.
The rest is upstate New York and always referred to as 'upstate.'

Shorted tho, I always type nyc.
To me, it's a different state in general.

XD speaking of this tho, the only state I notice that gets the "New" dropped from its name is Jersey.
I've never heard someone say they're from York or Hampshire when talking about the states. It sounds odd for the others but Jersey alone sounds right.

Probably because a lot of stuff in or about New Jersey uses just Jersey. Like Jersey Shore. So it makes it feel normal Jersey in the UK may be offended though, idk. Maybe they don’t care

It's always been New York here. I've never heard anyone say New York city

no because in my country no one cares about the states and already assumes it's talking about the city. and otherwise people just say "w stanie nowy york" which means "in new york the state".

Now that I think about it I think my grandparents only ever say New York too and if they want to talk about the state they also say “in New York State”

I’ve been quite a few times, but at least half those times were related to passports and/or flights. Probably more than half. And it’s not even that close to me
