Europeans used to believe tomatoes were poisonous. They were originally brought to Europe for ornamental purposes. Aristocrats began eating them in the 1700's, however, the dangerous material was actually the plates. The acidity in the tomatoes brought out lead from the pewter plates, giving people lead poisoning, and giving the impression that the fruits themselves were the reason.
