Photo Is It Just Me? I Think This Is Getting a Little Out of Hand (1 Viewer)

First off, I want to clarify that I'm not trying to shade anybody here, I'm very happy for EJAE, she's clearly very talented and I'm happy she's got the chance to win a Grammy and get the recognition she deserves. However, maybe I'm the only one that feels like this.. but I think KPDH is getting a little out of hand here. Whenever I search up k-pop, KPDH is the first thing to come up. Have people forgotten that KPDH and its characters are fictional? Not real? People think that KPDH is an accurate representation of K-pop, that the soundtrack represents K-pop music, but I don't think it is. It just makes me frustrated that this kids movie is overshadowing real, actual K-pop, to the point where its soundtrack is able to get all the way to the Grammys while idols who trained for years are still being snubbed from the Western market.

It's the first girl group song to top the charts in 24 years, just the ninth Kpop song to top the charts and the first with female vocalists, it's the longest topping song by an animated act in Billboard Hot 100 history.

As far as the soundtrack itself, I think part of the reason KPDH has done so well is because the OST does showcase so many different sides of Kpop. It's not just BTS's English tracks (Dynamite, Butter) or Psy, which for many Americans, may have been their only interaction with Kpop before. "Your Idol" doesn't sound like "Gangnam Style."

I get why it can be frustrating if it's not your thing, but IDK, I can't see looking at the most successful Netflix movie EVER with the song of the summer and the most successful girl group song in DECADES, and go "these flowers are too much."

I definitely do agree that they deserve the Grammy, I also think that a lot of the time when people vote for Golden, they think of Rumi and not EJAE. But that's just my opinion, I definitely see what you're saying.

i can see that.
I felt that way with Gangnam style, Psy is Psy not really kpop.

Huntr/x though is as real a group as most soundtracks.

I’m just confused how whether it’s kpop or not relates to the awards. I don’t know much about this topic but I assume there wasn’t a “kpop spot” that they snagged right? The spots weren’t looking at how kpop or not it is but rather stuff like popularity?

Yeah, you’re right — the Grammys don’t have a ‘K-pop slot’ and KPDH didn’t take anyone’s specific spot. My point wasn’t that it stole anything, but that the way people talk about it ends up overshadowing real K-pop.

What frustrates me is the way the public treats KPDH as if it’s the face of K-pop, when it’s a fictional, Western-produced interpretation. So when it gets huge recognition — Grammys, viral charts, etc. — it reinforces this version of K-pop in people’s minds instead of highlighting actual artists who train for years and make the genre what it is.

I’m happy for EJAE; she deserves it. I’m just annoyed at the way KPDH has become people’s main reference point for K-pop, especially outside of Korea.

People forget that the grammys are BADDDDD when it comes to actually awarding international acts in the major categories.
