I'm friends with an elf (suju fan) and shes an absolute sweetheart. I know a lot of folks dont like suju but i think the hatred people get for being fans of their music is a tad undeserved. Bonamana and U are great and even if you dont stan they get your head bopping a little

I lowkey question people’s morals if they actively support a consistently problematic group. I don’t think anyone deserves to be attacked or judged by their cover but it definitely raises some eyebrows

the issue is people can judge other people for the choices

for example if someone supports hitler then naturally other people can choose to judge them for their choices and question whether they want to associate or be friends with such a person

in a slightly less extreme example there are still a lot of people that support Seungri and thus other people can be naturally sceptical of those fans

I think the distinction though is that most ELFs I know (at least western ones) don't support problematic members (i.e. everyone trending #siwonout) and don't support the problematic actions of less problematic members. I think, aside from obvious cut and dry cases like Siwon, KIOF or Seungri, everyone supports "problematic" idols to some extent and it's not super useful to be super intense about that.

Exactly. People still stan groups after racist actions, people still stan idols after duis. I think it's interesting that homophobia (thinking about Siwon here) is a no go but racism is accepted, it really tells us how not progressive kpop fans are (I could go on about this honestly). Our social justice barely matters in such a neoliberal industry.

I'd also like to add: if a 'seperating art from the artist' mindset should be applied anywhere, it should be in K-pop where little groups have no control over what music they sing to or the clothes they dress in. and a lot of the time they don't get any income (this doesn't apply with these guys obviously). Suju members are shit, but their music especially early music is great. Again, a little hypocritical for us to excuse any cultural-appropriating dress by saying it's the stylists' fault whilst art that the idol didn't even create gets ignored cause the idol's a bad person. Producers should get more roses than they do. I fully understand boycotting if the members did create their music, solo projects they probably do and I wouldn't be surprised if some members have some hand in their later discography, but with their early music I don't see the point.

Conclusion is I think our standards of what makes an idol problematic/popular is just weird af and we as k-pop fans will always be hypocrites cause we always pick and choose our battles and who to boycott and shit, especially when black people have been complaining about the racism and cultural appropriation for years and nothing's been done.

Edit: If someone doesn't feel comfortable listening to suju's music then that's okay, we all have our limits (I'd be surprised if anybody legally stream Kanye for example), but demonising fans who a lot of time are just there for the music in an industry where the music is NOT made by the 'artist' will not get us anywhere.

everybody is free to support who they want and who they don't want...

I've always said this about cancel culture - everybody is free to cancel whoever they want for whatever reason they want (and vice versa defend or support whoever they want) since it's their right to do so and if enough people do it that's just the will of the people no?
if someone said I really dislike Jisoo (who is my ult) because she sucks at singing and dancing and acting etc etc and I want to cancel her I'd be like fine I disagree with your choice but it's your choice

and that extends both towards the artist and the fans who support such artists...which is why I said if you found someone who supports Seungri for example you might choose to judge them differently based on that (or you might not I mean that's free will)

and whilst I'm not on social media much so I don't really know if there are people who "hate" on elfs but maybe they do and it's their choice to do so no? just as other people who choose not to hate on them...
