[This news will be updated as these events progress]

Tsunami warnings for tsunamis 1M high have been issued along the Sea of Japan coast along Niigata, Yamagata and Ishikawa Prefectures and evacuations are in place after a major earthquake struck Western Japan.

I will be updating this as the events progress (NHK are currently broadcasting the events live)

And these are the warnings that I got on my phone....

Even though I am in Tokyo which is some distance from the epicenter. We still felt it here (just as most of Honshu and southern parts of Hokkaido felt the earthquake) and my heart sank as soon as I saw the tsunami warnings...

Besides some shaking and slow internet. Tokyo is fine..

These happen so often in Japan.. i hope there is no casualties this time.
Earthquakes are a daily occurrence. Earthquakes that are Upper 6 on the Shindo scale though? Not so common. And even less common than that are tsunami warnings and evacuations.

Thank you! Tokyo was fine aside from a bit of shaking.

What scale did it feel like in Tokyo? Stay safe.
It was reported as a 2 on the Shindo scale in Tokyo.

And if anyone was curious about the Shindo Scale and what it means.

I live in an earthquake region too. I've already experienced >6 on the Richter scale. It was probably a 5 on the Shindo scale.

The depth of the epicenter plays a role as well (and this is where the Shindo scale gets complicated). Because you could have a M7.4 at a depth of 500km and it'll only register at a maximum of a 4 in intensity on the Shindo scale. Whilst you could have a M6.0 at a depth of 10km and it could register at a maximum of a Upper 6 in intensity on the Shindo scale.

Different affected areas will also experience difference intensities. Usually the areas closest to the epicenter will experience the max intensity. However some areas further away could experience a stronger intensity than an area that's closer to the epicenter. I've seen it quite often where one area which is 'close' to the epicenter experiences a 2 on the Shindo Scale. Whilst another area a bit further away has experienced a 3 or even a 4 on the Shindo Scale.

(the Shindo scale is a great tool for emergency services to try and work out the possible hardest hit areas)
