On the other hand, I kind of hate digital singles. I don't really get their value proposition to the company, TBH, since there's nothing for fans to buy to support. Maybe @RandAlThor knows and can explain it to me...

I dont know but sm also has a history of this.
Heck you still can not buy Black mamba or Next level and those are huge hits for Aespa.
Next level is their only 2plat stream song on circle.

So they must be able to make money off a pure streams. with some assorted downloads.

It just seems so risky to me, because if the song doesn't take off, then they've invested into the comeback, stages, etc. that cost money that fans can't really pay back in. Like even a poorly received song that sells well can still be a net financial positive. Like i-dle Good Thing that's their worst charting song, ever, but sold over a million copies.

Though maybe that answers the question... after their string of hits and having a total flop, this might be a way to earn some goodwill back.

Just that a single is lower effort/time commitment when the girls are all very busy. And it does make sense to try to put the flop in the rearview mirror as fast as possible.
