Do you think that self-identification is enough for a stan to be a stan or must a certain criteria be met?

i.e. If someone says they stan Exo should that be enough or do they have to know Baekhyun's brother's girlfriend's mom's birthday...

I've never bothered learning birthdays. It's hard enough remembering my own plus if I really need to know I can just google it.

My requirements for stanning a group is at least liking all or not bashing members. I find it annoying people will say they like a group but they are actually akgaes.

Honestly, the only reason I look up birthdays is to find out which idols are Leos since I've noticed a lot of them aren't... Plus if I hadn't looked them up to begin I couldn't make people jealous by constantly mentioning that Bomi was born the same month, day, and year as I was.

I dunno, if you feel you care enough to call yourself a Stan, you're a Stan.
There are plenty of groups/solos where i know and like the songs and members but I just don't really care (Shinee Winner, Astro) And there are groups where I don't fully know all of that but I'm willing to put in the time and effort to learn (VIXX,MX,TVXQ,EXID,IU)

It's very difficult to define who is a stan since it seems everyone have their own definition. To me what sets a stan appart from a casual fan is passion.

Passion: intense, driving, or overmastering feeling or conviction

Everything else, be it memorizing all their names, birthdays, their dogs names, buying their stuff, etc, is a result of that. Every stan will support their faves according to their possibilities; so for me it's hard to judge who is a stan and who isn't, so I choose not to.

technically your not like, an exo-l or an army or a once unless you pay, i know on forums we all say we are even though i'd guess 70% have not paid to be in a fandom

From what I've gleaned from online sources they tend to range from 20k won to around 65k won depending on the group. That averages from around 17-65 US dollars. $17 isn't really that much. I could get $20 in an hour by working freelance. My point is, it doesn't seem like much, for me, to pay since there are things that I get every month that are luxuries that are the same. Thus, I suppose I would pay, but still I don't see having an official label would mean much on this forum, akp, or even YT, which are the forms of "social media" that I use to view k-pop content or talk about it.

Spoiler: Filler Content/Conjecture

I do have a story that is mere conjecture, but fits into how mere $20 is to me. I received $50 from my sister to enroll her son, my nephew, into college. A typical financial aid preparer receives $70... I ended up receiving $70, but that's because there were some issues that I had to resolve with the school. Thus, the fee for membership really wouldn't faze me, which says a lot since I only live on minimum wage... Which in my city means living in very low income neighborhoods since the good, or even acceptable, neighborhoods require one to provide proof that one makes 3 times the amount of rent, which is often 1000 or more, which times 3 would be $3000 and I make a little over half of that, but I have babbled on for far too long. Any longer and I will be critiquing Capitalism and people will think I'm a communist... and I'm not a communist... At least not anymore
