Well we're looking for water because life as we know it needs water, so it's the best place for us to start. But I think you're right in that for all we know, alien life might not even need water. Hell, a lot of creatures from our own planet can survive in conditions we consider to be inhospitable. The frozen ice caps of the poles, scorching hot vents underwater that reach several hundred degrees, toxic lakes, even the vacuum of space isn't a complete death sentence for some forms of life living here. So maybe a lack of water isn't a death sentence for extraterrestrial life.Definitely. Honestly, I highly doubt there isn't other life. Maybe not "aliens" as we depict them, with green skin and beady eyes, but something. Even something like a single-celled organism, or something microscopic. There in an infinite number of possibilities, tbh. It could even be a life form that's completely unexpected, like a plant-like organism with eyes. We've yet to discover all the life forms on Earth, who knows what the universe holds. Also, I feel like everyone is expecting that the planet needs to have water for the organism to survive. Like I stated earlier, this organism could be completely different, and not even need water. Who knows? Maybe they're even more developed than us.
Yeah, I definitely agree. Water would be the best place to start, since it's how we know life. The planet may not even be in a Goldilocks zone either. It could be some odd amoeba like creature on a planet like Mars. Maybe something like tardigrades? Tardigrades could easily live in space, so I'm thinking something like that?Well we're looking for water because life as we know it needs water, so it's the best place for us to start. Or it could be on a moon of a planet well outside of the habitable zone of a star. Some people say it's possible to have life on icy comets or asteroids, since a lot of the necessary components of life as we know it are already there. So really, even though that goldilocks zone seems like a good place to look (and it is) there are soooooo many other places where we could find it. And yeah, something living in extremely harsh conditions would probably need to be practically indestructible like tardigrades.Yeah, I definitely agree. I feel like there could be weaker life-forms as well. If there are life-forms in different solar systems that could live in different conditions to ours, then they will also not be able to live in such harsh conditions like humans. Without oxygen, humans cannot survive and oxygen is found on Earth. Maybe a different life form cannot live without a different type of air that is only on it's own planet. Or what if they can only live in harsh conditions and their bodies are not used to milder conditions?Or it could be on a moon of a planet well outside of the habitable zone of a star. Jeez. If we are alien's experiments, the experiment has flopped hard
I rest my case![]()
That's a cool way to think about it. Like what if the conditions which we consider normal are incredibly harsh for a certain kind of life, and only the strongest of that kind of life can survive. They evolved in their "harsh" conditions, so to them it would be normal. I guess harshness would just be a matter of perspective then.I feel like there could be weaker life-forms as well. Hmm, then it wouldn't be considered harsh for them, would it? This is so interesting. Maybe rather than using water, they use acid, like the acid rain on Mars?I feel like there could be weaker life-forms as well. Wow, I never knew that. If it's been proved that it can happen on earth, then it must surely happen on other planets in the universe too. That's a cool way to think about it. I mean it's not even that crazy tbh. A few billion years ago, there was pretty much no oxygen in the atmosphere, but there was still plenty of life living on Earth. Then, the atmosphere started to fill with oxygen, probably due to photosynthesis. This actually caused a huge mass extinction because much of the life on Earth wasn't suited for an oxygen-rich atmosphere and ocean. The conditions we consider necessary to support life as we know it now are too extreme for much of the life that existed on this planet a long time ago, and vice versa. So we even have an example of something like what you're talking about in the history of our own planet.
Like a substitute for water? So, hypothetically, if acid rain is essential to keep a certain life form alive, then it must have so many different adaptations than humans. I feel like we can't even begin to imagine the differences in characteristics that we would have to alien...Hmm, then it wouldn't be considered harsh for them, would it? This is so interesting. Yeah, something like that. Or maybe even some kind of liquid never discovered by humans before. Or maybe there is...living liquid? I don't know lol, but the possibilities are endless. Could you imagine that though? Walking liquid lmao.Like a substitute for water?
