Assume things when you are not very well versed about the subject in a conversation?

I do all the time because in my days the word "fact check" didn't even exist

And I always assume the other part will say some lies or other too so why bother anyway.

Also I can train my body language skills that way.

If it's sensitive matters like religion, I don't even take part in the conversation
But if it's a lighter matter, I do assume things but I let the other party know that it's an assumption and not a fact

But if you admit you are assuming, it becomes a battle of confidence if the other is not sure too.

I remember I once guessed which type of vitamin was in certain food and in the end I never knew if I sounded too dumb or as someone that knew what was being talked about.

I was just pretending that I care about stuff.

In rl conversations, the other party is never sure and they don't bother to assume either
And funnily enough, if they are sure for once they are wrong

I only assume if I am fairly confident about my assumption, i.e., if it comes from other facts that I know.

Otherwise it usually backfires and is just embarrassing for everyone (especially me).

it's actually the opposite, I pretend to know less than I let on just to see if someone is well versed in a certain or talking out their arse...
How else am I to access their character?

If I don't know something I listen and ask question then search stuff to double down on the new knowledge I've gained also to seperate thd bullshit that person may have been talking lol

When I was younger, I was essentially mute for a long time, so even now I'm naturally more of a listener anyways, so not really. I allow the other person to do the talking, which leads me to not assume things about certain topics, and if I do I just keep it to myself, lol.

I tend to not have those conversations in the first place, due to not being well informed or versed in them.
So I just stick to conversations I know something about.

But... if it do happens, I just ask questions.

I pretend to know stuff I don't know all the time lol. But it's not to win against someone or anything like that, it's just to avoid being judged and humiliated for not knowing something everyone else apparently does... it's a problem for me every single day tbh
