I never listened to rock but when Kriss Kross Jump came out EVERYONE was singing it. Before I heard it I thought everyone was singing the Van Halen version.

Yes, I was in the beginning. However, there was some non-sense that I unfortunately believed that said it was satanic music and that it had subliminal messages that corrupted those who listen to that music. I began listening to a christian brand of metal and I forgot those that became mainstream. It was not until the first 21st century decade that I knew that it was nonsense. So I bought many metal albums by then; bith from the 80s and those that then were current. Nightwish, Dimmu Borgir, Children of Bodom, Within Temptation, Trivium, Machine Head, etc. were in my playlists.
