Any fans?

This is probably my favorite Disney animated feature of the 90s. I was actually obsessed with this movie during the Summer of 2000. I watched it every single day. Also bought the soundtrack and bumped it in my car all the time.

Best opening to a Disney movie? Probably.

I loved it so much. It was my first Disney movie, I believe. I hadn't watched any Disney movies until I was 13. When I saw it for the first time I thought I would be the one who sings The Bells of Notre Dame lmao. I love the songs in it too ughfdjgkdnkljdfn

A lot of people think Disney hit a rough patch after The Lion King with Pocahontas, HOND, and Hercules.

The Hunchback Of Notre Dame is one of my favorite Disney films.

I think it's criminally underrated.

And I think it's intro especially, ranks as one of Disney's musical masterpiece. That intro.... Is everything I want a Disney intro to be.

It sets the tone for the entire film.

I actually didn't think it as great when I was younger. I saw it sort of as relegated to 2nd tier.

But as I got older. I went back. And it's elevated to one of my favorites.

It's a little unconventional in its dual focus on Quasi and the Captain as dual protagonists, which I think hurt it for resonating for many.

But the mood and epic scale as exemplified by that intro...... Just really reaches for wondrous heights.

I see THOND to some extent as a flawed masterpiece.

Much in the same way I see Pocahontas.

Pocahontas has some of the most beautiful and iconic imagery and musical pieces in any Disney feature ever but suffers from a lack of an engaging antagonist.

THOND has one of the most interesting and epic stories of any feature Disney has done, with some of the most resonant atmosphere and grand scale as shown by the iconic theme and intro as well as deeply personal themes of a hero who is not conventional or attractive but yet is humanized. But it's dual protagonist nature and in my opinion, weak supporting "sidekicks" troubles it somewhat, though only slightly.

I agree with this assessment. My biggest problem though were the Gargoyles. I didn't hate them but they really took away somewhat from the seriousness and epicness of the overall movie.

I would get so wrapped up in all the glory of this movie but as soon as they reappeared on the screen I was instantly reminded I was watching a Disney movie. Not implying Disney movies are a negative thing but this one could have soo much better without them. Maybe even have helped this movie get an Oscar nod like Beauty and the Beast.

Yea the gargoyles are who I meant by "sidekicks" so we're on the same page.

It's Disney so they have to have sidekicks. But I just thought they didn't do these as well as last ones.

Also a note on old Disney Nostalgia.

A lot of people (myself included) tend to love the period known as the Disney Renaissance, generally thought to be the period from The Little Mermaid through around the time of THOND.

This period is often held up as when Disney was making particular "Magic".

It's an overlooked element by much of the public but to anyone who follows the production it's of note how much this period depends on the music of Alan Menken the composer and early on Howard Ashman a lyricist.

They are as a pair and at time individually responsible for that periods music and songs.

Which were absolutely one of the defining elements of that period.

Disney has often struggled to recapture that magic in song for many of it's later pieces.

Howard Ashman died in the middle of the Renaissance. And Menken persists. And they used him for Tangled again later.

I love the Disney Renaissance. Most people seem to stretch it to Tarzan in 99. But you are right about the music. The stars aligned and those guys were producing gold after gold.

It's still weird to me when people refer to this period as old cause when I think of old I think of anything made while Walt was still alive. The 70s and 80s films aren't even old to me yet. Old for me is Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to The Jungle Book. Everything after that is still modern to me.

But yes it's also of note that without The Little Mermaid success animated movies would have went extinct. We may not have even got Pixar without TLM saving the dying American animated industry.
