I know I might get hate for this but nugu groups usually stay nugu for a reason. yes, it's usually because they're from smaller companies but still, many nugus aren't unique enough to break out. the majority of them are usually just following what bigger groups do and not actually trying to break out of the shell. and tbh a lot of them lack the star factor. the nugu groups that have broken out and have gotten decent success are usually groups who are unique and good. I mean look at Loona, they have a unique concept with a whole ass storyline that's been going on since 2016, they have great music videos, their music is actually good and it fits their own style, they still come from a small company, and they're very popular right now and are continuing to grow their fanbase. that's only one example but there are a lot of kpop groups who used to be nugu who broke out because they actually tried something different or idk they were just more interesting (ahem the biggest kpop group in the world right now, bts ahem). I mean I always see kpop fans talking about how unfair it is that only big three groups are popular and talking about how kpop fans should explore more of their options, but can you blame us? big three groups serve quality constantly. big three groups are all talented and usually have that it factor about them, they're popular for a reason. Whenever I see kpop fans recommending me nugu groups and I check them out, they just do not stand out to me, all I think is that they're just another group trying to become a bts, blackpink, twice, exo, etc 2.0

I hope this doesn't sound mean but It needed to be said.

loona had big 3 level money wasted on them early on now its gone and they are struggling.

Gfriend, MMM, Apink those were true nugus look at the early outfits. The companies had no money.
Gfriend and Apink were not different just good.
EXID got a break with a fan cam but had talent to back it up.
(unlike say momoland.... although that is maybe too harsh)

I think what you are really say is they are average/good and average does not get ya much.
Small groups need a break but more importantly they and the company must be skilled enough to capitalize.

Pristin was different and self composing (things people claim to value) exploded but the company was clueless now they are dead and gone.

How would you explain Nu'est or Viction though? Their music didn't change they just got more spotlight.
BAPs music didnt change either but they fell like crazy because of their lawsuit.
Wanna Ones music was never different from the rest of the competition.

Yes sometimes its true nugus dont have the same level of quality. But I don't think a lot of Big 3 groups are super unique. Look at Twice or Got7 for example. Ikon is very similar to Big Bang. Cube keeps on trying to make a Hyuna 2.0. A lot of nugus do have a lot of different sounds because they're trying to figure out what works, thats true. But some Big 3 groups do that too. Its just that in their case its called having variety rather then being all over the place. Not to even begin getting into nugu rookies, theyve had no chance yet and already are facing disbandment just because their company is small.

by nugu I mean usually not popular, yes Loona had big three money but they didn't really get popular until their love4eva era, people realized that they actually had a pretty cool concept (and there fans spamming them everywhere lol) and actually tried getting into them. and loona arent struggling popularity-wise now at least, they have a pretty decent sized fandom. they're still from a small company, just because they have money does not mean they can give Loona the same opportunities that big three companies can give.

also yes I guess you could summarize my post by me saying that average is not enough. Every group is average and good, what makes you stand out though? why would I want to become a fan of you if every other group is average and good? What type of IT factor do you have? Honestly, you really don't even need to have a different concept or be groundbreaking when it comes to a concept, you just have to be better than good, if that makes sense?

I said in my op that a big reason as to why they are unpopular is because of small companies. but I dont see what your post is trying to say? all the groups that you have mentioned did not get popular because their music was good or because they were interesting, they were lucky enough to get the opportunity to have a little spotlight. wanna one was never nugu, they were always popular, they were literally formed on the most popular survival show in kpop. if you promote something enough then yes it will get popular, but for how long is the real question? I dont know that much about Nuest or victon but they're not extremely popular from my knowledge, did they get some spotlight? yeah but only for a little bit. I checked out their recent comebacks and personally, I thought they were boring.

also, I'm not saying that the big three is constantly coming out with something groundbreaking, but big three groups usually have something about them that makes them popular. they usually have good music, members who have some sort of it factor to them, idk something that makes them stand out.

Blackpink isn't unique at all and that didn't stop them from becoming popular.
blackpink was the only girl group in the third-gen who actually did girl crush well and are the reason why girl crush is popular right now. had girl crush been done before? yes but Blackpink modernized it in a way that was popular. bringing them success with a hit song when they debuted. If you look at the year bp debuted, all the girl groups were doing cute concepts, bp did something different and did gc. Id say bp did something pretty unique for the time that brought them a lot of fans when they debuted and why they're so in demand right now.

none of these are girl crush except for 4minute lol. and 4minutes song was not gp friendly nor did it inspire a whole generation of girl crush for newer groups. this is the girl crush that I'm talking about, which is different than all of the songs that you provided and was truly different for the time it was released lol

I disagree with you. I find some BIG3 idols pretty untalented and I am not going to give name but I also find that some nugus have better music than some BIG3 groups.

All BIG3 groups benefit from theirs senior privileges.

People check and sometimes even stan X group before their debut because they are from X company. It’s something that don’t happen in the West. Even if an artist belong to a big label like Universal or Sonic, they aren’t sure to succeed.

That’s true, I’m not saying that every big three group is groundbreaking.there are groups from the big three who aren’t extremely popular for the same reasons on why I said a lot of nugu groups aren’t popular. I just tend to find that big three groups overall are usually popular for a reason. And the nugu groups who have become popular usually differ from their counterparts, usually In terms of quality of music.

Often true for the nugus who rose to stardom but what about groups like A.C.E, Oh my girl, VAV, April, ONF, Neopunch ? Because I have listened to every song by them and their discography are gems but they lack the connections and money so the exposure. They need a hit to break through and even with that they aren’t sure to make it. ( Momoland and Crayon Pop are good examples).

I think about a lot of the rags to riches groups (mainly ggs cuz that's all I know) and a lot of them didn't even initially get noticed for their music. They got noticed because something happened that made them go viral

Girl's Day and AOA were literally dragged from irrelevancy to becoming a top girl group overnight because of extensive mediaplay over one particular member.
Gfriend went viral because of Yuju falling
EXID and Hani's fancam
Lonna had money thrown at them yet they only blew up because of an online meme. They still don't have any standing in Korea.
All these groups needed was proper exposure and they went huge.

Even as a TwicePink stan, I don't agree that B3 groups are inherently more talented or deserving than the rest. They have better promotions and more people to push them to the forefront. A lot of them had fanbases before they ever even opened their mouths and there have been times when they've gotten away with releasing sheer noise. Most of them aren't more talented than others out there. I'll concede that they own their concepts well but the concepts themselves aren't always that original

I don't doubt that there are nugu copycats (even this is arguable tho) out there but I wouldn't say nugus deserve to be nugu

nugu‘s don‘t deserve to be nugu. every group has their own charm. I view it more as there are groups who get more and more opportunities and exposure.

A good example would be Oh My Girl. They are a nugu that is getting more and more popular, and always had Idols like Hani or Twice being fans of theirs.

Thing is idol world is overstating so a lot of good groups get overshadowed.

You really just seems like you're saying that getting a little spotlight means that you don't need good music right now. I know Wanna One was never nugu, my point was that they weren't known for good music or anything of the sort, yet they were crazy popular. Yes promotion is why but that's just me pointing out how little good music matters for being big. Being nugu puts you at a very strong disadvantage. They need to work super hard to get any sort of attention, and quite frankly good music isn't enough.

Nuest are big yes, more so in Korea but very big nonetheless. I personally lover their last comeback so I don't see what your opinion has to do with it.

I see nothing wrong with liking Big 3 groups but I just don't think that you liking them makes you right about why nugu groups are unpopular. You don't like them, fine. That doesn't mean they're intrinsically worse and less talented and therefore deserve to be less popular.

Well tbf nugus play it safe and copy trends for obvious reasons, they can't afford the risks that being a Big 3 group affords you. With Big 3, you know you'll have fans regardless, opportunities and a somewhat secure future. With nugus, one flop comeback and you might be gone.
I've never felt they lack talent or star factor, but they hardly get a chance to show off. What they do lack though are good producers, it's very apparent when I listen to some songs that they're nowhere as polished enough or mixed as well as the big groups have.

Regardless, sometimes there's the rare track that succeeds and a group is suddenly thrust into the spotlight. Unfortunately many times, the agency has no clue how to handle this sudden limelight, Momoland's agency is the biggest example.

Also wanted to say even releasing a super bop might not be enough for a nugu group. It needs to go viral for some reason or they need to be extremely lucky.
Imagine this exact song was released by a Big 3 group, it'd have been one of the biggest hits of recent years easily:

Oh My Girl are what most people would consider a nugu group however they have a solid identity and proved their identity on Queendom when they got the chance to shine.

Boms experience with Oh My Girl on Queendom says it all as she didn't know who they were when she started and by the end she loved them.
