Coronavirus patients can be left with damaged lungs, researchers claim

Dr Owen Tsang Tak-yin studied 12 patients in Hong Kong who had recovered. Two or three had sustained lung damage, causing shortness of breath, the doctor said.

A small study of 12 patients who were discharged from hospital showed that two or three had reduced lung function. They got out of breath easier when they took a brisk walk, the scientists said.


Scans of nine patients suggested sustained damage to their organs.

That's a bit misleading, you can't tell from so few people. Especially when there's multiple strains of the virus and it can be so different between demographics.

It doesn't say if it's a direct cause of the disease itself or medication. And considering the damage isn't severe enough to suggest long-term or permanent damage, I wouldn't be too concerned

If it's 12 patients that were hospitalised too then we can assume that they were in the 10% of serious cases too, tho i'm not sure how serious it needs to be to be hospitalised so that percentage might be much higher, but I know for sure that not everyone with the virus actually needs to be in a hospital, most of them just need to be quarantined and monitored so that presumed 75% doesn't represent all cases, only those that were serious enough for hospital treatment. Damage doesn't necessarily mean long term either, it could just be part of the recovery process and the majority of that ~very uncertain~ percentage will still go on to make a full recovery in the coming months.

There are medications to treat infections that cause a small amount damage to the organs. Honestly, a lot of disease fighting treatments are hard on the body. They're meant to be used for that specific infection and not prescribed long-term like say an antidepressant

12 people out 70,000 recovered cases that don't show signs of permanent damage and mainly just shortness of breath after a lung infection.

Most of the patients don't actually end up hospital though since most have just mild version that doesn't require hospital care. What I have read up is that with corona virus your own immune system can react too strongly and not only attack the virus but also own cells so that might be case for some lung dmg It is worrying, since usually flu doesn't leave any damage behind. Though the numbers of those left with dmg won't be that high as most have mild symptoms.
