do yall ever wonder "what did they spend time doing while they were trainees" when it comes to certain idols (1 Viewer)

this is not a shade or hate thread. but, I don't think I'm the only one who goes like this when I see idols who have spent basically their entire lives training in a trainee system, lacking in certain areas. or there are idols who trained less and are better then them skill-wise. obviously a lot of this can be blamed on the company not prioritizing basic performing skills when training their idols but still...

I don't think most companies have, or can afford, good coaches. And some like to favor showy styles over actual technical training.
Most of the top vocals/dancers already had a background doing so before they joined their agencies, so I really don't like to attribute that skill to them

But I always find it weird when idol B spends 6 years training and can't sing to save their life but improves drastically over the course of a few years after debuted. Unless it's a visual member, I don't get it

thats true, but still, there are some idols who have trained for 6+years who struggle to hold a note while dancing or even while standing still and im just like . Like i get that not every company can afford a vocal coach for each member but there are so many videos online that you could at least learn the basics of singing.

also, I wonder as well why so many idols improve so drastically after they debut. I wonder if it's maybe because of the criticism that they get from knetz, I think that when the company sees those comments they push the idols to do better in certain categories. but still, were those flaws really something only knetz could point out? idk...

Because kids by and large are kids.
Trainers / company are almost in the parent/teacher category ie not taken wholly serious.

Sometimes they have to get into the arena, and it makes sense. Kinda like kids out of university can tend to suck at the job but some excel after a few years.

yeah, that's true. but still a lot of trainees have talked about being scared for monthly evaluations and being relieved after they debut because they don't have to go through that anymore. I would think that the monthly evaluations would encourage them to improve just as much as they would improve when they debut. But then again, as you said, sometimes you can prepare as much as you want for a job but still suck because you don't have any experience in actually having a real job.

yeah balance seems to be barely there.

Well, those trainees who didn't train a lot might have natural talent.
It's kinda like sports: even if you practice hard, you wouldn't be at the same level as someone with a talent for the sport.
Even if they have trained for so long, they might not improve. If you're at your capacity, then you can't improve.
Also, there will always be an area where you lack skills.

true but if you practice at something for a long time then you'll at least be decent at it. even if you may not be the best at it, if your training for years like some of these idols are then you should at least be decent at your craft. Of course, there are always categories to improve on, but still, you shouldn't be severely bad at them to the point where it holds you back as an artist.

Ehh, I don't know
There are people who really can't sing. Even if you learn it, it's not decent sometimes. They often just learn how to sing specific lyrics so if you give them something else, they can't sing it.
Those trainees take a long time to learn and would just be kicked out tbh.
Companies look for people who improve.

exactly, usually, trainees who don't improve get kicked out. so why are there idols who only really severely improve apon debut? shouldn't they be at a stage already where they're at least decent at what they're doing? of course, not everyone is a natural dancer or a singer, but if you're going to audition to be an idol then you should have some sort of passion for performing.

I think most idols have a passion for performing tho. I don't think you need to be good at singing or dancing to become an idol. Think about rappers. Lots of them don't sing well and some can't dance well. Kyuhyun is the best (male) vocalist of kpop and he can't rap and he dances what he was taught (he isn't a good dancer). I think another point is like many of us they get to a point where 'this is good enough ' i can hang here and just do my job and get paid.
I think that is why i really admire those who keep in the journey.
Its hard with out name so ill pick a few.
Yeri - she will not likely ever be Wendy or Seulgi's level vocally. But she has worked to get better and branch out ie composing writing really worked on her vocals and dance.
Yuri - i think for a time she was just in that happy place, they were so busy and she was in university more to an acting side like Sooyoung and she did her job. Until she wanted to take on more.

I do for some mid or lower tier kids this ok place is great ... they really do not plan to do entertainment for their whole life its a short term gig.
