Believe me I'm not a big watcher of anime tbh,

but has anyone else become really picky about characters and them being generic af? It never used to bother me but now it really catches my attention in a bad way if a character is bland in personality or character design. I want something new and yet I know it can be really hard to create completely new characters without using some tropes or archetypes along the way

those things were all over my tv as a child :pepecross:
Same and I didn't even have a TV :pepecross:

Actually I did but I never used it because my dad and brother hogged it all the time

This has definitely been a problem for me somewhere a long the way and I actually stopped watching anime for a while. But idk I got over it, I guess. I love Anime and I really missed watching it so I just learn to deal with archetypes and tropes.

Also I'm kinda sick of seeing every second anime with the word 'project' in the title...

That's just natural. Once you watch more and more anime, you get to see the different tropes and archetypes used every time that you start being critical and looking for something different.
This.
The more you watch, the more you notice the difference in quality, becoming more critical.

I can't even find a good one except death note and black butler.
Parasyte and Tokyo Ghoul are pretty great

Kinda? I mean I have no problem watching "bad" anime, i have watched tons. I do get tired or bit annoyed of same old tropes though which is why I don't really watch some genres like harem/ecchi since I can't stand tropes and how they just repeat in every anime of that genre ^^; Then there is your generic shonen protagonists (good guy who is super strong and dumb), generic shoujo protagonist, generic love interest for both genres..

In other hand I feel like there is tons of good stuff that doesn't really follow tropes and bring something new. From this season's animes only I'd say none of Mob Psycho, Dororo nor Promised Neverland have your generic characters and don't really follow most common tropes and architypes either, they all feel fresh (well I mean Dororo is remake of 60s anime..).

You just have to find good stuff in middle of generic and characters.. and well sometimes tropes are fun too if they are excecuted well ^^

the most recent frustrating characters came when i was rewatching re:zero, i found that some of them are just so bland. Rem and Ram, along with Beatrice are the only characters I find memorable :/

I haven't yet watched Re:zero, i have been planning to since it is really popular and I want to know what's up, but what I have seen it at least somewhat has somewhat generic premisis- boy is transferred to alternative universe, there is lot of potential waifus and so on. It sounds text book isekai-genre and those are currently in rise, apparently it does do some things well though, but well maybe I will eventually get to it my plan to watch is quite large at the moment ^^;

I watched tokyo ghoul's seaaon 3 because the rest weren't available on netflix. It was ok, cliché at some points. I haven't watched the other, will do so. Thanks for the recommendation.
Anytime! Thanks for checking them out <3
