here something I love thinking about : consistent and inconsistent visuals

consistent visuals
these idols are pretty and always look pretty. good in every photo and don’t really have bad photos

Inconsistent visuals
These idols are also pretty, but the problem is that they don’t always get to show that (because their visuals are inconsistent)

consistent visuals are passable from all angles/lighting/styling/etc. I think Jungkook probably has the most consistent visual. Ever see a bad Jungkook photo? Didn’t think so. Angles and lighting cannot touch his beauty. He’s got a very non offensive, normal pretty face. I don’t think there’s a Jungkook pic out there that people could point to as a time Jungkook looked ugly

Inconsistent visuals, on the other hand, are passable from only a few types of angles/lighting/styling/etc. this isn’t to say that they’re ugly. Ugly idols will always look bad, no matter the angles/lighting/styling/etc. they can’t have pretty pics, because duh, they’re ugly. What separates inconsistent visuals from the ugly idols is that inconsistent visuals just require certain things to show off their beauty, while nothing can help the ugly idol except maybe surgery and photoshop. Off the top of my head, a very visually inconsistent idol is Taemin. Taemin is beautiful and id never say he isn’t, but a good 50-70% of his photos are just so unflattering, because certain angles just *do not* cooperate with his face. Ex. I hate how taemin looks head on, he suits the 3/4 view and similar much better. Taemin is still a visual, because he has lots of face potential, but his visual is just very needy.
to a lesser extent, Taeyong is also an inconsistent visual. Taeyong’s side profile is my deepest enemy because I highly dislike his nose bridge, and certain photos can occasionally highlight (in a bad way) his thin lips. But in other, better photos, he obviously looks like an angel. u would never catch me saying Taeyong is ugly, because duh, he’s not, but some of his photos are ugly.

this doesn’t mean that inconsistent visuals are worse than consistent visuals though. Some inconsistent visuals can actually be more attractive than their consistent counterparts. I have two theories:

2. The contrast between the ugly and the pretty photos is so stark that the pretty is magnified, thereby making the idol seem more beautiful

Going off that last point, the cons of being a consistent visual is that they don’t really have GREAT photos. They always look fine, but they can’t really rise above fine. They look the same from pic to pic, without any variances, good kind or bad kind.

I don’t think one kind of visual is better than the other tho. It really depends on the idols you’re comparing, ex. Super consistent visual Jungkook is prettier than super inconsistent visual taemin, but mildly consistent visual eunwoo is worse than mildly inconsistent visual Taeyong (fight me) .

However much you want to deny it, visuals are an important part of Kpop. They should be discussed and thought about just as much as music or vocals and dancing or personality. Being a visual takes skill, no matter what elitist music and talent stans will say .

And then there is even those whose looks shiny through when they aren't styled and have from light make up to none- but they might not look as good with more extravagant styling and make-up- it can't elevate them as much.

For me hair and styling are so important that there's not a single idol that I think always looks great and very few that always look bad. I think that's part of the reason visuals don't matter to me that much, since it's not something in general that I find consistent. I honestly find myself biasing people based on vocal or dance skill and then as I fall for them I sudendly like their visuals more, although I don't know how that works.
