Last year around this time, BLACKPINK was getting a lot of buzz: April 2019 saw the K-pop quartet with a Billboard Hot 100 Top 50 single in the form of “Kill This Love” and a Top 25 album with the EP of the same name, which they showcased at Coachella 2019. This busy month arrived came amid their BLACKPINK In Your Area world tour, which held its last shows in February. A year since they were undeniably atop of the game, fans are wondering if BLACKPINK will ever release a new album.

The lack of release news from the group, which has kept busy with ad campaigns, televised appearances, and even launching their own fashion lines, has prompted consternation from fans across the globe, eagerly hoping for BLACKPINK’s return to their sonic areas. After previous promises from the band’s label, the lack of news of a planned 2020 album is making fans concerned about whether the act's new music will ever arrive.

Though it’s not atypical for western acts to take well over a year to release new music, in the world of K-pop many of the most popular artists tend to release an EP, or mini album, and a full-length LP each calendar year, with many acts releasing even more than that, keeping their fans well-fed with one cycle of releases after another. BLACKPINK, who shot to fame with their debut singles, “Boombayah” and “Whistle” in August 2016, have released a handful of albums in that span, but the majority have been single albums or EPs, resulting in a total of less than 20 songs over the group’s lifespan, even as they’re one of the reigning K-pop acts of this generation.

No news of confirmed releases from the act, which features members Jennie, Rosé, Lisa, and Jisoo, has evoked a sizable response from their fans, known collectively as BLINK. Protests late last year resulted in the act’s company YG Entertainment clarifying that a forthcoming album was set to drop in early 2020 after fans questioned where previously-announced upcoming new music from both the act and solo members were. Regular protests online by fans trending hashtags requesting clarity for why there has been no album has become a regular occurrence among fans of the act, with BLINKs around the world trending things like the recent hashtag “BLACKPINK1YearOfHiatus” as they eagerly request information from YG about the state of BLACKPINK’s forthcoming music.

The dearth of new BLACKPINK may feel like deja vu to those familiar with YG Entertainment’s earlier girl group 2NE1, which similarly only released a handful of songs throughout their high-profile career together from 2009-2016, though male acts at the label have traditionally released more fully-fleshed discographies than female counterparts; late last year, former 2NE1 member CL left YG and promptly released her In the Name of Love album full of tracks that had never seen the light of day under her former label.

Though their company keeps assuring fans of upcoming music, it’s unclear what really is in the cards for BLACKPINK in 2020, as the year is already well on its way past the “early part.”
Last year saw YG suffer major losses after several high-profile criminal investigations surrounding artists and executives at the label and a series of following exits. But other artists, such as WINNER and iKON, have released music since the start of the year as the South Korean company appears to stabilize after the tumultuous previous year . The global coronavirus pandemic ostensibly could be a reason behind the delay of the BLACKPINK album that YG stated was planned for early this year, but seems unlikely considering that WINNER released their Remember album earlier this month.

When asked about any update on the status of the allegedly in-the-works album from BLACKPINK, YG Entertainment did not respond for a comment.

Even though the previously-announced BLACKPINK album has yet to arrive, new music will, hopefully, be arriving soon that features the act: after weeks of rumors, the Twitterverse lit up on Wednesday (April 22) in excitement after Target’s website seemingly accidentally leaked, and then deleted, the tracklist of Lady Gaga’s coronavirus-delayed Chromatica album, which appeared to feature a song “Sour Candy” with BLACKPINK. Later in the day, Lady Gaga herself confirmed the tracklist with an Instagram post, confirming that if the world is getting a 16-track album with not only the BLACKPINK-featuring “Sour Candy” but also songs with Ariana Grande and Elton John. That album is currently on-hiatus from its original planned release date of April 10, but hopefully will arrive soon.

The article is pretty much spot on but just one thing: 2ne1 actually had constant releases throughout their career. It's true that after 2012 they started to have one comeback every year (which is less than other 2nd gen groups indeed), but 2ne1 had their first mini and first full album within 2009-2010 not to even mention that by 2011, almost all their songs (2ne1's second mini album) were promoted.

Idk..I’m still mad they only had about 32 songs after 7 years & that 2012-2013 were only singles and no mini albums.

Your right though, YG’s management has gotten worse because in the digital age they can market BP as influencers and still get money. In the early 2010’s that couldn’t happen but if they could have done that they would have. And if BP needed more musical output and musical marketing to be profitable YG would change their strategy.
