Do people make fun of your accent? (1 Viewer)

I often have a thick Minnesotan accent when saying words like "Minnesota", "water", etc. Everyone around me seems to think it's absolutely hillarious, and without a doubt, there will be someone saying "Why do you say your o's like that? It's Minnesota not Minnesouhdah".

I usually have the general American accent, which is why when my Minnesotan accent comes out occasionally, it's very apparent. What about you guys?

I grew up in the south of England, and when I moved to the north my friends made fun of me for sounding 'posh'. Like I would say laugh like 'larth', and they'd say 'lath', if that makes sense lol

Ah, that's not cool at all. 😓

The Minnesotan one is a bit different because I'm a native.

Ah, hate when that happens. People assume the same of me due to my demeanor and tone of voice, but really it isn't true in the slightest. It's nice having people view you differently though.

Not often, but sometimes for both my Finnish and English accent.

Less with my Finnish accent.. or more like dialect. But since i moved cities, i still mostly have my hometowns accent which has some different words and sayings than where I moved to. But overall they aren't that different.

Then about English. Well people mostly comment how I roll my Rs when I speak English... Using English pronounciation of r middle of sentences is hard for me. So I often end up using finnish R's, which is lot stronger. And apparently some have hard time understanding my accent/pronounciation because of it ^^;

Mostly its not making fun in bad way though so doesn't bother me, but sometimes it becomes more of negative, but that's from other finns not really by people from other countries. It's just that Finns in general hate Finnish accent and try to mask it as well as they can. When I was in high school our teacher tried to teach everyone to speak with british accent which to her was right way of speaking english. Didn't work out in my case, I'm horrible with accents.

Well, I went to college in the south US for five years. Now every once in a while when I'm speaking, an unexpected Southern drawl comes out. I've been told that I sound like I'm from the south. I also have a deep voice, which some people do make fun of.

It was just unexpected, that's all. I don't say that I blame them though. As you have a younger voice and less clear enunciation (which isn't a bad thing at all), it sounds off for sure. Your voice is also higher pitched. I feel like this is less related to your accent and more related to your voice in itself. Your voice is cute!

Not really.. I have an London accent, with slightly more annoucaition on particular words... So where I grew up I was viewed as more posh/educated compared to where I went to college which it seemed 'normal' although more surprising considering where I grew up they expected my accent to be more 'ghetto'... But it wasnt made fun of much apart from the whole 'you sound white' on occasion 🤨
