Yeah I agree. And on top of that it is an American problem, so harassing non americans over it does bother me a bit more.

I think while you as a non-american aren't obliged to CARE.... If say non-americans make another tag trend while it is going on that would be like actively fighting against their cause.

You don't have to care, but if you TRY to make smth trend you are, even if unintentionally, fighting against their attempts to pull as much attention as they can to the problem.
