Here are 3 anime, that in my not so humble opinion, deserve a lot more viewers and fans among the international otaku community. Often, when anime discussions come up, I rarely see these names mentioned. However, give these a shot and you won't be disappointed :sanapray:

From 3rd to 1st:

3. Cross Game (MAL rating: 8.47)
Genres: Slice of life, sports, comedy, romance, school

Kou Kitamura and Aoba Tsukishima are often at odds—even though their families happen to be close friends and business partners. Although the only child of a sports shop owner, Kou has never been interested in playing baseball. Despite this, he possesses an impressive batting ability honed by frequent visits to the local baseball batting center run by the Tsukushima family. On the other hand, Aoba loves to play baseball and is a star player with exceptional pitching form.

However, these two seemingly complete opposites share something very important to them—Wakaba Tsukishima, Aoba's older sister and Kou's destined sweetheart. Admired by the quarrelsome duo, Wakaba often finds herself the catalyst to their never-ending rivalry. But whether or not they realize that they have more in common than either would care to admit, only time will tell. The game of baseball may just be what the pair needs to ultimately overcome their own personal struggles.

Cross Game on its surface is a baseball series, but the driving force behind the anime isn't the MC striving to be the best player or winning championships. Instead, it's about him and his childhood friends, particularly 2 of them, how they deal with shit life throws at them, and basically a tale of them growing up. The tone is light hearted, but there are still some serious gut punches along the way. However, the characters don't get too angsty or wallow in self misery, no edgelords or emo bois. The dialogue and characters are fun and likable, and it's neatly wrapped up in 50 episodes. Watch it if you want a great feelgood series with nice character development.

2. Shigurui: Death Frenzy (MAL rating: 7.42)
Genres: Seinen, historical, samurai, psychological (Warning: mature audiences only, gore, sex and violence)

At the beginning of the Edo Era, when people enjoyed a time of peace, Lord Tokugawa Tadanaga holds a fighting tournament. In the past, matches were fought with wooden swords. This time, real swords will be used.

One-armed Fujiki Gennosuke and blind Irako Seigen will fight each other in this match. Both are disciples of Iwamoto Kogan, who is known as Japan's greatest swordsman. Each of them are determined to prove himself the successor of Iwamoto's school. However, there can only be one champion.

So begins a story of intertwining fates, conflict, and strange destinies.

Set in Japan's Tokugawa (Edo period), Shigurui follows 2 warring clans, the deceit, lies, and brutality that results from their feud, as it builds to a climactic showdown between one armed Fujiki Gennosuke and blind Irako Seigen. It doesn't pull any punches, so exercise caution before watching. The plot is good, but what really makes it memorable is the presentation. The gorgeous art, character design, soundtrack and voice acting, and the style. The series is mostly one long flashback leading up to the battle and it's the two memorable main characters who drive the story. There isn't quite anything like this out there. The fact that it's for mature audiences can't be overstated enough.

1. Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei/The Tatami Galaxy (MAL rating: 8.62)
Genres: Surrealism, psychological, comedy, romance, mystery

One autumn evening at a mysterious ramen stand behind the Shimogamo Shrine, a lonely third-year college student bumps into a man with an eggplant-shaped head who calls himself a god of matrimony. Meeting this man causes the student to reflect upon his past two years at college—two years bitterly spent trying to break up couples on campus with his only friend Ozu, a ghoulish-looking man seemingly set on making his life as miserable as possible. Resolving to make the most out of the rest of his college life, the student attempts to ask out the unsociable but kind-hearted underclassman Akashi, yet fails to follow through, prompting him to regret not living out his college life differently. As soon as this thought passes through his head, however, he is hurtled through time and space to the beginning of his years at college and given another chance to live his life.

Surreal, artistic, and mind-bending, Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei chronicles the misadventures of a young man on a journey to make friends, find love, and experience the rose-colored campus life he always dreamed of.

Two things you notice about this series immediately- the art/animation, and the dialog. It's animated in a way unlike most anime out there- the hand drawn characters and backdrops are gorgeously detailed and fluid, but if you've gotten used to the traditional anime style, it can be a bit of a shock. On the other hand, the dialogue is spoken in a superfast Osaka accent and reading the subs and trying to keep up at first can feel overwhelming, but it's by design. The protagonist's life circumstances seem to overwhelm and swallow him whole, and the dialogue/monologues add to this vibe.
Looking for that "rose colored campus life" but falling spectacularly every time, mostly thanks to his "best friend"/nemesis Osu, the series is a humorous but introspective look at how the various choices we make impact our lives with their consequences. The unnamed protagonist tries desperately to get things right, and it results in a surreal viewing experience akin to a Woody Allen/Terence Malick movie that will stay with you for some time to come :sanapray:

Senpai making anime thread :wat:

I have actually seen Tatami Galaxy, watched it semi recently. The fast dialogue rly took some time to get used to, but it's pretty witty and interesting anime overall.

Shigurui reminds me bit of Blade of Immortal that i watched recently, it's another mature samurai anime :d

Oh you did? Yeah it's pretty unique but the dialogue just hits you so fast from the start lmao :jisoosmh:
Shigurui is a lot more graphic, atleast the anime. I guess the mangas are about the same level lol. I actually watched the Blade of Immortal live action movie :haylul:
It's by Takashi Miike :sanapray:

It's definitely unique, and i did have bit hard time keeping up with everything xd

It is, though Blade of Immortal is too. I'm not sure about the live action movie. I heard that the anime was bit cencored, but it still was pretty brutal :jisoosmh:

Speaking of samurai stuff, have you seen the anime movie Sword of the Stranger? :sj_weary:
It has probably the greatest sword fight ever animated lol.

Great, now you only need to watch the live action Rurouni Kenshin trilogy (esp coz they're making a 4th and 5th movie to finish the final arcs) and then we samurai masters :lisalaugh:

The only anime I ever watched was Fruits Basket and that was because I accidentally came across the books in high school and loved the fact that it was about animals lol. Any other similar anime to that?
Also, I guess during my holidays I'll give these a try.

Yep, the second season of the remake is currently ongoing : )

It's mostly same, but with upgraded animations and continues after s1. However the ending will be different as 2001 anime had anime original ending that the mangaka hated.

What's a mangaka?
Also I can't remember the actual ending but if she doesn't end up with the cat-boy I'm sending in complaints to whoever they're meant to go to. She better not end up with the rat-boy.
