WARNING! THIS REVIEW WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS FOR STAR WARS EP. V: THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK!

Ok so this might be a little bit of an unpopular opinion... but I liked New Hope more than this movie! I know that the general consensus from the fandom is that this is the best one but to be honest, I found the story line of Episode IV to be a lot more compelling than this one. Not to say that this is a bad movie because it definitely isn't but I have a feeling that by the end of this event, it won't be my favourite.

Just like the last time, this is my my first time watching this movie the whole way through and once again I enjoyed it a whole lot more than I did when I was a kid. The worlds in the Star Wars universe are so unique and convincing, it almost reminded me of watching the first Harry Potter movie and how real they manage to make the wizarding world feel. From the moment you see Luke on planet Hoth, you completely believe your looking at a faraway planet and not Norway. I also wanna reiterate how well these movies hold up visually so far maybe it's just due to my personal preference for practical affects but this movie still looks great in 2020 and as far as I could tell, it didn't have any of those ugly CGI cut scenes butchered into it like the first movie did which definitely helped my viewing experience (again, this is more of a criticism of Disney+ than the actual movie).

This movie was originally supposed to be written by Leigh Braskett in collaboration with George Lucas but unfortunately, Braskett died of cancer not long after finishing the first draft, leading Lucas to write several drafts himself before bringing in Lawrence Kasdan to finish it for him. I didn't know this during my first review but apparently, George Lucas basically wrote the first movie himself because of his inability to secure a professional writer and hated the whole process which took him nearly four years to complete which is why he decided to hire Braskett. Like I said previously, I like Lucas as a writer and the way he structures his stories but I think the extra help from Braskett and Kasdan really helped to improve some of the issues that I had with A New Hope, namely the lack of emotion in moments of tragedy although I still feel like Han getting frozen alive and Luke losing his hand were still slightly under played. I know that I mentioned this before but I want to go into more detail; I REALLY love the structure of the storytelling in these movies so far, I love how there's not an over focus on one main story line and how your not necessarily told how the movie is gonna end with the first 15 to 20 minutes. It almost feels like your watching one long episode of television and the way the movie switches between Luke's training with Yoda to Leia and Han trying to escape Vader kind of reminds me of how Game of Thrones is set up.

Now on to the characters, Princess Leia is still my favourite and I really liked the way she's developed from the first movie, she kind of reminds me of a less pretentious Hermione in a way which is definitely a good thing! because Harry and Ron are trash but that's a whole other franchise! I have to admit that I found some of the dialog between her and Han kind of cringe but that's probably more of a generational thing so I'm gonna choose to look at it within the context of the time that it was written and not judge them too harshly although I have to admit that when Han didn't say I love you back I wanted to jump through my laptop screen and punch him in his arrogant f*cking face! They definitely focused more on Luke in this film and I think that might be part of the reason why I preferred A New Home, not that there is anything wrong with him as a character, I just personally find the others more compelling to watch is all. I have to be honest when Yoda was first introduced, I got a little worried because I was finding him a little annoying but I eventually grew to love his stern but sassy training methods (Luke didn't deserve him tbh). Also Lando Calrissian is a bastard but a sexy bastard her is so Jakey_Yoda will have to forgive his betrayal... plus he chose the right side in the end!

Overall, I get why some people would prefer this movie over the original even if I personally don't. There were definitely some major improvements made from the original and there is no denying the long standing impact that it has had on the entirety of pop culture today!

3 out of 5 Stars

It's 00:50am in my country and I would like to OFFICIALLY announce Zaddy Lando as my Man Crush Monday!

2 of the best meme lines ever from this movie.
"i've got a bad feeling about this" and "its not my fault"

And of course all the Yoda gems... that is why you fail.... Do or do not.
Yoda really did say some profound shit in this movie...
