VIXX’s Ravi has shared just how long it took for him to start making money as an idol.

On the latest episode of MBC’s “Don’t Be Jealous,” Hyerim and her fiancé Shin Min Chul spoke to each other candidly about their financial situations, leading Hyerim to point out that she had made a lot less money than most people would have expected for a Wonder Girls member.

As her fiancé reassured her that she had done well for herself, the celebrity panelists watching the footage from the studio agreed, “Of course. She’s earned a lot.”

Shinhwa’s Jun Jin commented, “Not all idols earn a lot of money. But a lot of people mistakenly think that all idols earn so much money.”

Ravi chimed in, “In my case, it took [VIXX] about a year and a half to win our first music show. I thought that we’d immediately get rich after that, but it actually took us over four years to start earning money.”

Comedienne Jang Do Yeon pointed out that as an active songwriter, Ravi had a ton of copyrighted songs to his name, but Ravi humbly responded, “I do have a high number of [copyrighted] songs, but I don’t make much money.”

Jang Do Yeon then cracked everyone up by joking, “Are you [saying that] because you’re afraid we’re going to ask you to lend us money?”

I'm not surprised. A lot of former idols have talked about this and a lot of the misconception comes from how the companies present them.

You see them in designer clothes and stuff but it'd be safe to assume that the company bought it for them and/or is owned by the company. People always use to joke about idols exchanging clothes with each other but really there's probably a company/group wardrobe (actually nct did show their's before).

Yeah, idols don't make as much as you'd think. Net worths always seem huge, but you have to take into consideration the fact that debts and stuff are not included. Debts are huge

Im a little surprised by this bcos i thot tat idols who write n produce songs get rich - was watching an episode of Running Man the week it was out where Yu Jae Seok teased the songwriter/producer/idol B.I. for how much bank he made from it. (That episode since not been shown on cable channel repeats in my country, n probs everywhere showing KBS cable channel: tat episode also had Seungri appear.)

Maybe its cos of relative popularity tat Ravi took 4 yrs to earn money from his activities as an idol, unless agency debt is the main reason. It sucks. I just dont know. Tats my 0.02$ so im gonna stop here.

Well TBH you hear a lot of idols talk about having ot ask family for money and being broke. Even BB spent times scraping from the bottom of the barrel before the dollars signed in. Around the 5 year mark is pretty average time when idols start making money I noticed. That is if they start making a name for themselves. Look how many big idols in their day ended up having to take average jobs once they left the industry. When the company want all the money back they put into you, your bound to make sht unless you make it really big or hold a lot of copy righted songs.

It varies on the level of success.
gfriend was making money after 2 years. obv pristin never did. We Me has been around ~3 years they may be there since Yoojung and Doyoung made the ioi money.
gbugudan as a whole i would doubt makes money.

I think it isn't a subsidiary or anything, at the very least I've never seen it in any connection to Jellyfish.

Ye it says Ravi isn't a Jellyfish artist anymore, idk if he'll promote with Vixx when they come back or what not.

A different argument though is that the artists never went through training in the company, which is where a lot of the debt usually comes from. They were just signed to the company immediately
