Okay but in all actuality who tf listens to kpop for the lyrics?? Y’all are here because these are pretty men and women who are talented (sometimes) and they all make catchy fun music to listen to. Not because they make “meaningful music” or whatever the hell that means. Sure it’s cool when it happens but the majority of these people who talk shit about other groups lyrics don’t even know or speak Korean, they gotta google translate that shit. So the first thing they talk about when it comes to their faves music is not the lyrics but the song itself.

right and even the artists you mentioned have songs that are just for fun. i like meaningful lyrics, it's just not the first thing I look for in a song. especially kpop considering i cant understand korean.

I hate when people use it as an argument to say their faves are the best or smn... cause at this point everyone has smn like that in lyrics.

I do like to sometimes check lyrics cause they can be pretty good with certain groups and types of songs.

While I do find songs encouraging or inspiring because of the lyrics, it doesn't make them better than songs that don't have deeper lyrics. Music is music, if you like songs that talk about partying all night that's great and if you like songs that talk about pushing through life when it gets hard that's also great.

i fully agree, it's so exhausting to see people put down a group/artist because their lyrics aren't considered "meaningful" or anything like that. not every song has to be deep and profound. of course it's a good thing when the lyrics talk about an important topic, but it's not a necessity and no one does it all the time. every kpop group, even those praised for their meaningful lyrics, has at least one song which is simply meant to be fun and entertaining. it doesn't apply just to k-pop, things like that happen in almost every music genre. for me, lyrics can be totally nonsensical as long as the song itself sounds good. however when the song is unlistenable, not even the greatest lyrics ever written could convince me to enjoy that.

I will be the first to disagree slightly...... While yes I do agree that many of us listen because of the hot bod and the music itself... I have heard from a few that use it as a replacement for what they view as Western sexualized pop music.. [Which depends because some k-pop can be just as sexual, but there are limits. c.f. Rainism controversy.] And you can sort of infer from emotion used to determine if a song is meaningful (c.f. Goodbye, Love in the Ice, and Promise). However, I will agree that there are times when peoples brains need to decompress and listening to music that isn't quite intense is important... if it weren't Kesha and Britney would not have careers..

I will also stipulate that much of what people may view of k-pop can come from an unawareness of sorts. Do certain artists/groups not write their material because they don't want to or because they aren't allowed. Plus lets be honest--a lot of k-pop fans are younger (i.e. ~12-15) and have skewed views of what is meaningful or not based on biopsychosocial processes.

like it could be some of the best lyrics written in history and I'm still not gonna listen to it if the actual song itself is bad.

if the song itself is good and the lyrics as well are good, then im obviously gonna feel more connected. but people don't understand that good lyrics don't just have to dark. they can be fun, poppy and playful as well.

i can understand that but really I think some kpop fans overexaggerate western lyrics when it comes to it being "inappropriate" and even if it is I never understand why that was such a bad thing. a kpop idol does the same thing, cusses, talks about how much money they have, and how many girls/boys want them and they're praised for how they're breaking boundaries but god forbid a western artist does the exact same thing and they're automatically deemed too inappropriate for their ears??

it has way more to do with the fact that they can't understand what's being said in kpop songs so it automatically okay. if any of these kpop fans understood Korean and looked at the lyrics of a k hip hop song theyd see the same exact same shit that they would see in America lmao.

of course, im gonna be a little turned off if the lyrics are extremely bad but i just don't think "meaningful" lyrics are the end all be all of whether or not a song is good. especially when it comes to kpop.

eh well I'm able to enjoy not well-written but catchy songs, but tbh I do very much prefer meaningful music even when it comes to kpop and mostly listen to that..

I find the song more catchier if there are meaningful lyrics. When I know what the song is about, especially if it's about hardships and lgbtq, etc, I enjoy the song more knowing that they are singing about a love of the same sex or how they have struggled in life, etc because I can relate to that.

Honestly if I wanted meaningful lyrics, I wouldn't be a K-Pop fan
I'm here for the fun. Idols are meant to be icons of fun and they're mostly marketed towards the younger audience so obviously their music will also be a representation of that. It doesn't mean the older audience can't listen to it, but it's mostly not meant to be taken that seriously which is why the general public usually doesn't care about K-Pop but love other artists.
Also, K-pop stans need to get off their high horses already. Every K-pop group has released music with nonsensical and repetitive lyrics lol. Every K-Pop group also has at least one song with meaningful lyrics. So their arguments don't make sense at all.

K-Pop is meant to be enjoyed. I don't know why people have to turn everything into a fight.
