Tell me what you think! I'm actually almost done with chapter two as well! lol

~Chapter One~

“Excuse me, miss?” I heard a male voice saying as I slept on the flight from Charlotte, North Carolina to Seoul, South Korea. I slowly opened my eyes and rubbed them to get rid of all the crust. “We’re landing now; would you lift your seat up, please?”

“Oh!” I said, blushing with embarrassment. “Yeah, of course. Thanks.”

I lifted the back of my seat and, when the passengers were given the okay, unbuckled my seatbelt and got ready to deplane.

The purpose of this cross-globe trip was to meet up with Bae Soon-Yeon, a pen pal I’d had since seventh grade. This will be our first time meeting in person, and I was beyond excited for it.

Once I went through Korean customs and baggage claim, as well as the process of getting a rental car (it was a nice champagne-colored Chevy Sonic), I checked into the hotel and got settled before calling Soon-Yeon on the number she’d given me. A female voice answered after two rings with something in Korean.

“Um… hi,” I said nervously, not having a clue what she just said. “Is Bae Soon-Yeon there? I hope I have the right number; this is Rachel Browning.”

There was a pause, and for a minute I started to think she’d hung up on me.

“Hello?” I repeated.

The girl laughed. “I’m just playing; of course, this is Bae Soon-Yeon! It’s so good to finally talk to you, Rachel-ssi. How was the flight?”

“It was okay. I got into town about an hour ago and just checked into a motel for the night. I was thinking we could meet up for breakfast somewhere.”

“That sounds good. There’s a breakfast café called Innisfree, which has very good food; I go there all the time. Shall I give you directions?”

“That would be wonderful!” I cradled the phone between my left ear and shoulder as I grabbed a pen and the pad of paper on the bedside table. “I’m ready when you are!”

After she finished dictating, I told Soon-Yeon to have a good night and that I’d see her tomorrow.

-*-

The next morning after I finished getting ready to meet Soon-Yeon, I called my grandma, who was watching my golden retriever Trixie for me, to tell her I’d gotten into Seoul last night. She answered immediately.

“Hey, it’s Rach!” I said.

“Hello there, Rachel!” Gramma greeted. “Did you get into town okay? I know this was your first international flight. And did they accommodate you well?”

The reason Gramma asked this question was because I’m 35 weeks pregnant with what would’ve been my boyfriend Wesley’s first child if we hadn’t broken up.

Wesley had called it quits on me after five years of dating, just when I thought he was going to finally propose. Instead of a shiny diamond ring on my 21st birthday, though, he gave me a Dear Jane note saying he was leaving me for his ex. Apparently, he hadn’t stopped thinking about her, even after we found out about the baby; I’ve lost my trust in men ever since.

“Yeah, they put me in the first row,” I said to Gramma. “I was just about to head out for breakfast, but I thought I’d call you first.”

“Oh?”

“Yep! Remember me telling you about my middle-school pen pal, Soon-Yeon? I’m meeting up with her this morning.”

“Oh, yes – I do remember! Where are you going?”

“This place called Innisfree; Soon-Yeon says the food there is delicious.”

“Oh, how exciting! Your puppy has been missing you dearly, by the way; she was looking high and low for you all day today!”

“Aw… well, I’ve got to go, but tell Trixie I miss her too. Bye, Gramma; love you!”

“I love you, too, dearie.”

~Chapter Two~

POV: Rachel

The restaurant was extremely hard to find even with the directions, and I ended up arriving about fifteen minutes later than intended. As I got out, I looked around for a girl wearing a mint green top and jean jacket. I didn’t have to look long, though, because Soon-Yeon spotted me first.

“Rachel-ah!” I heard her call out. I looked in her direction and approached her with a smile on my face. “I’ve been counting the days!”

“Me too!” I said as we shared a long hug.

Soon-Yeon and I walked in, and Soon-Yeon said something in Korean to the hostess. She then led us to our table and gave us menus, bowing before she left us alone.

“How have you been?” Soon-Yeon asked after we placed our orders. “I see you’re having a baby; congratulations!”

“Thank you,” I said with a smile. “I’m 35 weeks along, so the baby will be here sometime around Thanksgiving.”

“Wonderful! You’re two weeks behind my sister; she’s having a little boy. Do you know what you’re having?”

I shook my head no. “It’s a surprise. Congratulations on becoming an aunt!”

“I thank you very much. Speaking of my family, do you remember my cousin Ji-Min?”

The name rang a faint bell for me; as I recall, she’s only ever mentioned him once or twice. “Vaguely. Is he the one with the band?”

Soon-Yeon’s eyes lit up. “Yes, that’s him! They have a concert here tonight, and I was planning to take you with me.”

“I don’t know… you told me before that they rap, and I don’t really care for rap.”

“Ah, but they also sing! Please join me; I’ll even introduce you to Ji-Min after the show.”

“Well, I can never say no to that. It’s a deal!”

-*-

Soon-Yeon and I spent the rest of the day sightseeing, trying various Korean foods, shopping, and of course taking pictures of our favoriter sights. At five, we headed over to the arena, arriving just as the doors were opening.

“So, let me play some of BTS’ songs for you to see if you like them,” Soon-Yeon said when we were settled in our front-row seats. She gave me one of her earbuds so I could listen with her.

“Okay,” I agreed, smiling with anticipation as Soon-Yeon selected a random song on her iPhone. The sounds coming through to my ears were actually quite pleasing. “Ooh, I like this. What’s this song called?”

“Me too! It’s called ‘Just One Day’, and it’s from their latest album.”

“Cool!”

thank y'all so much! Here's three! (plus an add-on to chapter two that I thought up last minute lol)

~Chapter Two cont'd~

After the song was over, Soon-Yeon was putting her phone away when I heard someone calling her name.

“Soon-Yeon-ssi!” Ji-Min greeted as he jumped the barricade and attacked her with a tickle fight.

“Ji-Min! You’re crushing my pelvis!” Soon-Yeon yelled through her laughter.

“Oh, sorry.” They both got up, and Soon-Yeon introduced us.

“Nice to meet you, Ji-Min!” I said, shaking his hand. “So, you’re Soon-Yeon’s cousin?”

“Yes, I am,” Ji-Min said. “My mother is her mother’s sister. How long do you know Soon-Yeon?”

“We became pen pals when we were in seventh grade. It actually started out as an English assignment, but we ended up hitting it off and keeping the friendship.”

Ji-Min nodded in understanding. “Oh! That is really nice. I go now, okay? Enjoy show!”

“We will,” Soon-Yeon and I chorused.

~Chapter Three~

POV: Rachel

Soon-Yeon had been right about the band being amazing – they certainly were! In fact, the concert made me want to become a fan. I told this to Soon-Yeon when asked how I liked it, to which she let out a laugh.

“I knew you would!” she said before she led me backstage. When we got there and found the guys’ dressing room, Soon-Yeon knocked on the door.

“Who is it?” someone called out from inside.

“It’s Soon-Yeon!” she called back. “I’m bringing my friend to meet you guys!”

The door was opened a moment later by a tall guy with light brown hair, whom I recognized as Seok-Jin through his self-introduction during the concert.

“Hello, Soon-Yeon,” he said, giving her a flirtatious smile. “Who’s this?”

“Don’t waste your time, Jin,” she said. “This is my friend Rachel Browning, and I’m bringing her to meet you guys.”

We followed Seok-Jin inside, where there was a Korean TV show on, presumably a soap, judging from the dramatic background music. The room, which was bigger than an average living room, was furnished with the TV, two couches, a large coffee table, two vanities, and two bathrooms.

“What are y’all watching?” I wanted to know.

“It’s a K-drama,” the tallest member, whom I recognized from earlier as Kim Nam-Joon, explained, pausing the show. “It’s kind of like a soap opera in America, but in Korean. I’m Kim Nam-Joon, by the way; I’m the leader of the group. And you are?”

“Rachel Browning. I really like y’all’s music.”

“Ah, thank you!”

Just then, Ji-Min came out of one of the bathrooms wearing an undershirt and boxers. “Hello, Rachel,” he greeted, pronouncing my name like “Leh-ee-CHEL.” “How you like concert?”

“We loved it!” Soon-Yeon chimed in. “So, Rachel, you’ve already met Park Ji-Min, Kim Seok-Jin, and Kim Nam-Joon, and the others are Min Yoon-Gi, Jung Ho-Seok, Kim Tae-Hyung, and Jeon Jung-Kook.”

“Nice to meet y’all!” I said. “Are the Kim guys brothers?”

“No, Kim is just a very common surname in Korea,” Nam-Joon explained. “Our Kim is like your Smith.”

“What part of North Carolina are you from?” Ji-Min asked.

“I’m from Belmont – it’s just west of Charlotte,” I replied. “Have you ever been to the States?”

“No, but we plan to next summer for our first world tour. Our first stop is New York.”

“How exciting! I’m super-jealous right now – I’ve always wanted to go there. From what I hear, it’s a beautiful place, and you’ll be glad you went!”

“We’re definitely looking forward to it. You’re a delightful young woman, Rachel; I think we should be friends.”

“I agree. Do you want my number?”

“Yes, of course!”

After Ji-Min and I exchanged numbers and other contact information, I was about to ask the guys how long they’d been together when I felt a sudden pain in my belly. I keeled over and groaned, and Soon-Yeon asked if I was okay.

“Ooh… yeah, it’s just a cramp,” I lied. It felt like much more than a cramp, but if this was labor, no way in hell was I about to give birth in a foreign country where more than half the population spoke only Korean.

“Are you sure?”

“I said I’m FINE!” I protested as another contraction came.

“Did you know my girlfriend is a delivery nurse?” Tae-Hyung asked in broken English. “You’re totally in labor!”

A team of EMTs arrived within five minutes of Soon-Yeon summoning them, and the first question, as translated by Soon-Yeon, was how far along I was.

“Thirty-six weeks,” I said. “Do any of y’all speak English?”

“I do,” the woman replied. “How painful are your contractions, from one to ten?”

As if on cue, a contraction came that was so strong, it caused me to shriek and go into a crying fit.

“Not to worry, ma’am,” she said, strapping me onto the gurney. “You are in very good hands, and we’ll make sure both you and the baby are healthy.”

Awesome. I'm waiting for the next chapter.

~Chapter Four~

POV: Rachel

Apparently, the reason I’d gone into preterm labor was all the walking I’d been doing before, during, and after the concert. The doctors were able to stall my contractions long enough for me to be airlifted to Charlotte, but by the time I arrived at that hospital, the contractions had started up again. This warranted an immediate delivery by C-section, which I was none too happy about because I’d wanted to give birth vaginally.

“Well, at least one of your wishes came true, Rach,” Dr. Dawson said over the baby’s cries after he lifted it out of my uterus. “It’s a little girl!”

Dad gasped. “I finally have a granddaughter to spoil!” he cheered. “Congratulations, honey!”

Dad was right about this being his first granddaughter. All three of my siblings’ kids are boys: two sons for my older brother and one for my older sister.

After she was weighed and measured, Dr. Dawson places the baby on my chest. Despite being born early, she weighed in at seven pounds and seven ounces and measured eighteen inches long.

“Hi, happy birthday!” I said to the baby as I stroked her fuzzy auburn hair. In the meantime, Mom was taking a picture of this special event. “Mama loves you so much! Is your name Gabby?”

“I thought you were naming her Macy?” Dad said. “Wasn’t that the name you and Wesley agreed on? Y’all should really think about reconciling; you were perfect together!”

I scowled. “I am NOT getting back together with that jackass!” I said. “Macy is out the window, and her name is Gabriella Caroline Holcomb.”

“You’re not keeping Simone either?” Mom asked. Simon is Wesley’s middle name, and we had planned to pass it down.

“Y’all, shut up with the Wesley thing already!” I yelled. “Besides, I moved on months ago! Gabby’s middle name is Caroline.”

“I think Gabriella Caroline is a gorgeous name, boo!” Patsy, one of the attending nurses, commented. “She has your nose, too.”

“Thank you,” I said with a smile.

While I waited in the maternity suite for Gabby’s tests to be done, I texted Soon-Yeon the picture of me holding Gabby, adding a caption saying, “It’s a girl!”

Not long after I pressed “Send” on the text, Soon-Yeon called me on FaceTime. She was dressed quite nicely and had her hair in two long braids.

“Rachel-ssi, congratulations!” she said with a wide grin. “When was she born?”

“Just a few minutes ago, at 5:51 in the morning,” I said. “Her name is Gabriella Caroline Holcomb.”

“She’s gorgeous! Do you have her with you?”

I shook my head no. “They took her in for her tests and haven’t brought her back yet. What are you all dolled up for?”

“I have a date with Seok-Jin tonight; we’re going to the movies.”

I was slightly taken aback by this. “But I thought you weren’t giving him the time of day? At least, that’s what I gathered from when you introduced me to the guys.”

Soon-Yeon shrugged. “I decided he’s worth a shot. He was way out of my league, but there’s something about him that I can’t resist; I can’t put my finger on what, though.”

“Oh, okay! Well, have fun!”

“Thank you; tell Gabby her Auntie Soon-Yeon said hi!”

I laughed. “I will.”

As soon as I hung up, there was a soft knock on the door, followed by a nurse aged about 35 coming in. “Good morning, Miss Holcomb!” she greeted. “Congratulations on your beautiful baby girl!”

“Thank you,” I said. “How did Gabby’s tests go?”

“She passed all of them with flying colors except for her jaundice test,” the nurse reported. “Miss Gabby is getting treated for it in the NICU right now, and since she was born four weeks premature, she’ll need to stay there at least until her bilirubin decreases to a decent level.”

I sighed with disappointment, even though I expected this to happen since I’d gone into early labor. “How long will that take?”

“It varies from baby to baby, but it usually only takes about 24 to 48 hours; she’ll be fine. But how are you feeling?”

“I’m okay,” I said, letting out a big yawn. “A little tired.”

The nurse nodded. “I’ll let you get your rest, then; you’ve had a long night!”

After she left, I closed my eyes and went to sleep.

~Chapter Five~

POV: Soon-Yeon

Shortly after I hung up with Rachel, Seok-Jin rang the doorbell. Before answering, I put on a sweater and grabbed my purse.

“Soon-Yeon-ah!” Seok-Jin said. “You look radiant!”

“Thank you,” I returned. “Where are we going for dinner?”

“Do you like sushi?” Seok-Jin asked as he offered me his arm. I took it, and he led me out to his car.

“Yeah, I love it!” I said. “How did you guess?”

Seok-Jin laughed. “I don’t know. There’s a new place in town that got rave reviews if you want to go there.”

“Sure! I love trying new places to eat.”

When we got to the restaurant, Seok-Jin opened the door for me as we walked in.

“Table for two, please,” Seok-Jin said to the hostess in Korean.

“Right this way,” she said, taking us to a corner booth near the kitchen. “Your server will be with you shortly.”

“What have you been doing lately?” Seok-Jin asked me after we decided what to eat.

“Oh, nothing much,” I said. “But I got a new dog recently, and I’m starting to consider moving in with Rachel to help with the baby.”

“Oh, dogs are fun! What is its breed and name?”

“He’s a yellow Lab, and I’ve named him Bandit.”

Seok-Jin laughed. “Sort of like the girl group!”

“Yeah, kind of… but he pretty much stole my heart the first day I saw him; that’s why I named him Bandit.”

“Oh, okay! What person in their right mind would name a dog after a K-pop group, anyway?”

We laughed together, and he changed the subject. “So, Rachel had her baby?”

“Yes, it’s a girl,” I said. “She sent me a picture; her name is Gabriella.”

I did some tapping on my phone as I selected the picture of Gabby on Rachel’s chest immediately after birth. When I turned it around to show Seok-Jin, he gasped in awe.

“How beautiful!” he commented. “I like the auburn hair coming in – just like Rachel’s hair!”

“Me too! I can’t wait until I have kids.”

Seok-Jin gave me a sly smirk. “We could do it tonight.”

I laughed. “I didn’t mean right now! I meant when I’m ready.”

“I understand. You wouldn’t want to have sex with a technical stranger.”

“Exactly!”

~~~~~
POV: Rachel
I was awakened a few hours later by my phone ringing. I sat up in bed before I picked up.
“Hello?” I said.
“Hello, Rachel; how are you?” I heard Ji-Min ask on the other line.
“Hey, Ji-Min! I’m doing alright; I had my baby about three hours ago.”
“I know; I heard from Soon-Yeon. I come see you, is that okay?”
“Oh, sure! Are you leaving now, or what?”
“Yes, we’ll be in Charlotte in a day or two. I cannot wait to see you again, Rachel.”
I blushed. “Aw, thank you for saying that! You’re so sweet. Call me when you get in so I can give you directions to the hospital, okay?”
“I will do that.”
